Obituary for Millicent Pearl Bradbury

Millicent Pearl Bradbury
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Millicent Bradbury announce her peaceful passing at James Paton Memorial Hospital, surrounded by loved ones, on October 11, 2017, at the age of 98 years.

Millicent was pre-deceased by her husband Wilfred; her parents, Richard and Sarah Annie French; her brothers Malcolm French (S.S. Caribou), Rev. Watson French (Nan), Graham French (Helen), and James French (Janet); and also the brothers of her late husband (Pearce, Malcolm, George, Raymond and William). Leaving to mourn but celebrate her life with fond, loving and lasting memories, her three children, Marilyn Hounsell (Emerson) of Gander; David Bradbury (Peggy) of Burlington, Ontario; and Bill Bradbury (Danielle) of Gander. Also leaving five grandchildren, Susan Hounsell (Kevin), Robert Hounsell (Leanne), Davina Bradbury, Jason Bradbury and Jennifer Bradbury (David). Also, five great-grandchildren, Aiden and Charlotte; Kaymen, Kenyen and Kiara. Millicent also leaves a large circle of friends and extended family in Gander, Bay Roberts, and Ontario. Millicent will be especially missed by her extended family in Bay Roberts with whom she maintained regular contact, particularly her sister-in-law Nellie Bradbury and niece Evelyn Cave, who sang like a nightingale to her almost every evening over the phone.

Rested at Stacey's Funeral Home, Gander.  Funeral service was held on Saturday, October 14th at 2:00 P.M. from St. Martin's Anglican Cathedral.  Interment followed at All Saints Cemetery.

Special gratitude is expressed to Millicent’s loving and devoted home care providers, Mary Lou Hodder and Hazel Durnford. Thanks are also expressed to special friends Nick Soper and Marie Matheson who visited her frequently.

Heartfelt thanks to the staff of JPMH for their care and compassion.

Millicent led a healthy and active life. She continued to drive and walk into her 90s and was able to remain in her home throughout her lifetime. Millicent particularly enjoyed the fellowship of her church and church community.

Donations in Millicent’s memory are gratefully accepted to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or St. Martin’s Anglican Cathedral.

Millicent was born August 24, 1919 in Bay Roberts to Richard and Sarah Annie French. She was surrounded by the love of family, relatives and friends from an early age growing up in the close knit community of French’s Cove the east end of Bay Roberts. With the care of four doting and protective brothers she had a very safe and happy childhood. An avid reader with a keen desire to learn she progressed through school and enjoyed participating in many church centered programs and activities. Her world was rocked when in 1939 while on his way back from ‘The Labrador’ her father died and subsequently in 1942 she lost her loving brother Malcolm on the ‘SS Caribou’. Helping her dear mother through those sad years was her main goal at that time. Shortly after in 1943 she obtained her Teachers certificate and with wings on her feet she pursued her dream of becoming a teacher. She taught in Stephenville and on the Northeast coast, before returning home where she met the love her life, Wilfred John Bradbury and after a whirl wind romance, married him on June 24, 1947. He was working in air Communications during the war years and Millicent joined him to start a family on the old town site in Gander.  She became a loving wife and mother to three children; Marilyn, David and William (Billy). An active mother and a volunteer with the Vera Perlin, St. Martins and the JPM hospital in the town of Gander a place very close to her heart. She built a secure and happy home for her family. She was a keen gardener, composter and recycler (a long time before composting and recycling was in vogue), who dearly loved the outdoors, and the natural environment. Happy and very delightful summers were spent in Bay Roberts with the extended family. Dark days returned when in Feb. 1985 Wilfred passed away and it was her faith in God, her loving children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, her church community and the love of friends and relatives that truly guided her in her day to day living. She remained very active physically and mentally through her 80’s and early 90’s, living independently in her own home, surrendering her driver’s licence at age 90. She remained in her home with the love and support of family, friends, relatives, her church community and her very dedicated caregivers up to the time of her passing.
