I was blessed to have known both of my great grandmothers and both sets of grandparents. I have lovely memories of each of them.
Two things come to mind when I think of Nan Fry. The first is her thoughtfullness and her generosity. I remember one year when I had wanted a Holly Hobby doll for Christmas. Though I was pretty excited when I opened my gift I can still see the look on her face and how happy she was to have given it to me. I know that it gave her great joy to buy it for me. There was a time when I was about ten or so and I was sitting with her and was admiring a purple stone butterfly pin that she was wearing. When I told her I liked it she handed it over to me to keep without giving it a second thought. She and Pop always remembered us on our bitrhdays and would send money in our cards each year. Whenever they came to visit us at Christmas they enjoyed taking us out to Swiss Chalet for the festive special. Mom and dad have a photo of me taking my first steps in front of their house in Gander...perhaps with Nan cheering me on! The second thing is Nan's sense of humour. She enjoyed life and she loved to laugh. She had great fun sharing jokes with others.
Nan's school chums in Scotland called her "Holy Ina" as she knew Jesus from a young age. This didn't dampen her love for God. On the contrary it only served to fuel her enthusiasm for Him. She served the Lord in many ways for many years. She and Pop passed this legacy down to their children. In turn my father (along with my mom) have passed this down to me. And I hope to pass Nan and Pop's legacy on to others. I am so grateful to have had Christian grandparents and parents--what a gift they gave us! Though I miss her and am so very sad that she is gone I am happy that I know where she went and that I will see her again some day. She was there when I took my first steps on earth so she will be there when I take my first steps in heaven!
