Calvin
February 4, 1939 – January 25, 2018

Promoted to Glory, in the presence of his loving family, at the James Paton Memorial Regional Health Center in Gander on Thursday, January 25th 2018, Albert Calvin (Cal) Way, just 10 days short of his 79th birthday. Cal was born in Bonavista, the son of Isaac and Marion Way. He received his early education there and then attended the Trade School in St. John’s studying wireless communications. From there he studied meteorology in Edmonton, Alberta before being transferred to Cambridge Bay NWT in 1958 with the Federal Department of Transportation where he worked as a radio operator and later a flight service specialist for 2 ½ years. Afterward he was transferred to McMurray Alberta, presently Fort McMurray. Cal married the love of his life on April 19, 1962 in St. John’s Newfoundland. He and Edna lived in Fort McMurray for two years before being transferred to Gander in 1964 where they settled to raise their family and serve the Lord they loved.

Cal loved music, he studied banding methods through the Salvation Army in London England completing both levels of correspondence courses. He was always learning from the special guests he invited to attend band weekends and retreats and was never afraid to ask questions that would benefit him and those he taught. He served as the bandmaster of the Gander Citadel band retiring after 34 years. Through his leadership the bands musical ability improved as well as its reputation for service. Along with raising money for new instruments and music Calvin was always looking for new opportunities of ministry for the band both here in Newfoundland and on the mainland. Although his many contributions to this group cannot be listed here, we are proud of the selfless dedication he continued to pour into his love for God and the musical gift he was given. His passion was with the young people and through his ministry, the youth bands at Gander as well as the three Salvation Army camps in Newfoundland, he taught many how to play an instrument and encouraged them to practise so they might use their talents for the lord. In 1988 Cal became the first bandmaster of the Central Newfoundland Divisional Youth Band. He organized many special occasions and weekends away with the highlight being a trip to Ottawa Citadel. A particular honor he was very proud of was conducting the Divisional Youth Band for 7 different Generals of the Salvation Army. He retired after 20 years of faithful service in that capacity.

Cal was a man who loved his friends and valued the time he could spend with them. He will be greatly missed by special friends Calvin & Shirley White, His McDonald’s coffee buddies, his Bowling and Curling teams, retired co-workers and of course his driving pals.

Left to mourn with loving and cherished memories are his beloved wife and best friend for 55 ½ years, Edna, two wonderful sons William (Bill) and Brian, and daughters in law Judy & Corina, six grandchildren who he dearly loved and supported Alicia, Amelia, Alexander, Rachel, Kylie, Mykala. His brother Wilmore (and friend Emily) Oakville Ontario, sisters-in-law Marion Taylor ( Melrose Mass.), Ruth Warren, Carrie Gill (Mt. Pearl), Emma Snow (St. John’s), special Aunt Ollie Way (Bonavista), aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins.

Cal was predeceased by his parents Isaac and Marion Way, Sister Major Loretta Hicks, Brothers-in-law Major Allan Hicks, Joseph, Chelsey, William and Reginald Snow, Val Taylor, Gordon Warren, Sister in law Hilda, Eva, Lorna and Helen Snow.

Family will be receiving friends at Stacey’s Funeral Home, 60 Roe avenue on Saturday January 27, 2018 between the hours of 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. and on Sunday January 28, 2018 from 10-11 a.m. A service of tribute will take place at the Salvation Army Citadel, Gander on Sunday January 28, 2018 at 2:30 p.m. Visitation will continue at The Salvation Army Temple, Torbay Road, St. Johns on Monday January 29, 2018 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. from where the funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. with interment to follow at The Salvation Army Cemetery, Blackmarsh Road, St. Johns. As expressions of sympathy in lieu of flowers donations in Cal’s memory may be made to the Clarenville Salvation Army Building Fund.
