Condolence From: Randy Hale
Condolence: Edna, Bill and Brian .... Before you read this message Calvin will be in heaven... I met your husband / father nearly 40 years ago at my first music camp at Northern Arm. It was at that time I met each of you and was exposed to a very passionate and musical family. At first, Calvin's approach intimidated me a bit but I soon realized it was his passion and love for music - aggressively encouraging young people like me to be the very best we could be in our service to God. I recognize I am merely one in perhaps thousands of young people that your husband / father has touched through the years in profound ways not only musically but spiritually as he frequently reminded the purpose for what we do - giving praise to God and encouraging others in their discovery and understanding of God. The stories, the laughter, the music and faith are each gifts we were pleased to share. I strive to continue this legacy as I'm sure each of us who knew Calvin are doing in our own unique way. Truly one of my mentors in life. I told Cal (years ago) that he should write a book ...it would be both entertaining and inspiring: an ordinary man doing extra-ordinary things. If it's not already written maybe someone will be inspired to write. God bless you all Randy Hale Edmonton

Condolence From: Heather, Matthew and Norah Osmond
Condolence: To Mrs. Way, Bill, Brian and family, So sorry to hear of Mr. Way's passing. We will continue to pray for each of you. While I may not have recognized it as a young person growing up, Mr. Way was a true example of a servant leader. He was committed whole-heartedly, and expected the same from his many bands. He encouraged you to push yourself beyond what you thought you could accomplish, and was excited for you when you achieved what he set out before you. "See, I told ya!" Most importantly, he was invested in people. When I was 15 and involved in a car accident, he was the first person from the corps to come to our door and see how I was doing. A dedicated, encouraging, caring servant of God. We are very grateful for how he influenced our lives and our Christian growth. He will always be remembered with love and gratitude.

Condolence From: Jennifer Anstey (Crann)
Condolence: Mrs. Way, Bill, Brian and Family, Words are never enough to say! So here it goes. Mr. Way was a great leader and teacher. He taught me so many things in my years growing up in the Corps in Gander. First of all he taught me Music, not just brass but a love for Music! I learned Piano, woodwind, string, etc.. and went on to teach privately over the years as well as lead worship bands in my years of full time officership/youth pastorship. He taught me a love for God and a desire to see people give their hearts to God "Bless Them Now" We'd sing. He taught me commitment, "If you are going to be a part of this band you will attend practices, and DRESS like the rest of us" I always had a little trouble with that one, LOL. He taught me unconditional LOVE, No matter how many times I'd make a mistake or how many disagreements (there were many) we'd have, he loved me just as much as the day before and wanted me to success. Thank you for sharing your husband and father with us over the years for Gander Band, DYB, Music Camp, Road Trips and all the extra he'd do. You have an amazing Dad and Husband! He will be missed 100%. See you Mr. Way someday at Band Practice in Heaven, I figure you are already helping out. What a Day it will be!

Condolence From: Deon Yates
Condolence: To Edna,Bill and family,Brian and family. I am at a loss for words, which for me is rare,as I think of Cal. Words like mentor, trainer, encouragier, compassionate, friend come to mind. Cal was all these and more to me and countless others. I don't think I would have the same love for banding if Cal had not realized the need for a divisional youth band , my life may have even taken a different path. Cal saw things in me that I couldn't and pushed me to develop those skills, for that I will be forever grateful. We all have a Cal story or moment, mine came last year when he told me he was proud to see me conduct the Congress chorus and that I had done a good job, that will forever be MY Cal moment. Please be assured of my prayers for you during these difficult days and rest assured in the promise that if we remain steadfast and true we will meet Cal again. Lord "Bless them now".

Mr Way started me on my musical journey so many years ago, he never gave up on me all the days we practiced at his house, he always brought out the best in me. From his cat named “dog”, to telling me endlessly to stop swinging my legs when I played, to stop talking to Rodney at band practice.... you have left a huge legacy and wonderful memories Rest In Peace today Mr Way... and I’ll meet you on the other side. Heaven has gained the best bandmaster I’ve ever known. Xo

Condolence From: Mary Hinchey
Condolence: Edna, Bill, Brian and family, It is with a heavy heart that I write this message of condolence. I first met Cal 25 years ago at the Gander International Flight Service Station. I was so blessed to have had Cal assigned as my OJI (On the Job Instructor). He taught me so much and not just about the job - I learned alot about life, to treat others with respect and to enjoy my work. He instilled within me a great work ethic and I still find myself, even after all these years, asking "What would Cal do in this situation?" He entered our workplace every day with a smile - I knew it would be a great shift with Cal in the room! He introduced me to as many colleagues at the ACC as he possibly could; I always appreciated this and have tried to emulate his kindness whenever a new employee starts in the building. After Cal's retirement we remained friends and I always enjoyed meeting him, especially at the Kiwanis Music Festival where he was an avid volunteer. I will never forget Cal and thinking of him always brings a smile - I cannot imagine having a better OJI or co-worker or friend. My deepest condolences to you all and know that you are in the thoughts and prayers of many at this difficult time. XO Mary

Condolence From: Barbara Moore
Condolence: To Edna & Family, So sorry to hear of Calvin's sudden passing. However, we rejoice in the fact that he has, truly, been Promoted to Glory and is now in the very presence of the Lord he loved and served, so faithfully, for so many years. The impact he had on the lives of so many young people, musically, can never be fully appreciated by others, but can, for sure, by the young people themselves. In addition to his musical influence, Cal was known to be a godly man who lived out his faith in his daily living before family, friends, and co-workers. While my late husband, Howard, and I were divisional leaders, in the NL East Division, we got to know Cal a little better especially when it came time to prepare Congress events. May the Lord bless you, Edna, and give you His all-sufficient grace as you embark on this lonely road knowing, though, that there is coming the dawn of a beautiful reunion day in heaven. With Love & Prayers to each of you.

Condolence From: Heather Flynn (Crann)
Condolence: Edna,Bill,Brian and family, I was so sad to hear of Cal’s passing. Then so many wonderful memories of him made me smile. I have to say he had a positive impact on my life. Growing up in Gander, I was blessed to have such a positive role model, who loved the Lord. He taught me the importance of being dedicated to group you were involved with such as the Gander Citadel Band and DYB. I remember the extra lessons he gave me before going to National Music Camp. Some of my favourite childhood memories are of music camp as a camper and then a counsellor . Take comfort that he is resting in the arms of Jesus. Thoughts and prayers are with you Heather

Condolence From: Paul Blake
Condolence: To Bill, Brian and Mrs Way. My deepest heartfelt condolences to your family. I have too many fond memories of Mr. Way to even start listing. I played in the church band, I attended the music camps, I went on the road trips. When I was 23 I began working with Cal at Gander Radio until he retired. More recently I would see him at McDs with his coffee buddies. When I started working with him, I then realized how much of his time he had given to us over the years to fit in the band practices, church, music camps etc and still work shift work and raise a family. Bill and Brian....be forever proud of your dad. He was one of a kind and made us all better people. My sister Suzanne thought there was no one better than Calvin Way....she was right . He will be missed.

Condolence From: Glenn Watkins
Condolence: Edna, Bill, Brian & family. I was saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Cal. I have many a fond memories of Cal from my years spent playing in the band. I can remember the first time that Cal placed a horn in my hands in the basement of the old Citadel as if it were yesterday; though that being nearly fifty years ago. Cal played such an influential role in many of our lives thru his love of music & his faithfulness to the Lord. I'm so thankful for the many memories that were made over the years that I had the honor of knowing Cal. One song that I recall that Cal loved to close out the band practices with was, " I'm in His hands..." Cal, you are now promoted to Glory & forever in His hands. You will be greatly missed by so many here on this ol' earth, but, never forgotten! My sincere sympathy to Edna, Bill & Brian; you all are in my prayers these days. May God keep you in perfect Peace.

Condolence From: Glenda & Don Crawford
Condolence: We were shocked to hear of Cal's passing. Always remember when my sister Marlene and I moved to Gander in 1977 and how Cal would pick us up for Band practise each week. He made sure we got involved with the young people of the church and was an incredible influence to us. He had an amazing gift in music along with a servants heart. He loved Jesus and was a daily testimony to His grace, forgiveness and compassion that Jesus has for every one of us. Can't thank you enough for the positive influence and for instilling the love of music in each one of us. Our deepest condolences to Edna, Bill, Brian & families. We will be praying for God's comfort, peace and strength in the days ahead. Hold on to the promises of God to get you through until we all meet together in our heavenly home.

Condolence From: Jonathan Pippy
Condolence: Mrs. Way, Brian, and Bill: I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Way. Growing up, I had the chance to live behind Mr. Way, and he was always a man I looked up to from the first time I was old enough to climb up over the fence to see what he was up to on any given day. As I got a little older, I sometimes wished the fence was a little higher, because he somehow always found a way to figure out how long it was since I last touched my trombone. I will always remember Mr. Way's encouraging words, and I will never forget some of the advice he gave me when it came time for me to take over the leadership of my own corps band. Whenever I had a question, Mr. Way would always be willing to pick up the phone, or take the time for a coffee whenever I was home. I look back and I am thankful for every time Mr. Way pushed me to try a little harder, and to go a little further. I am also thankful for all of the time Mr. Way invested in me, and it's my hope that there will always be someone who believes in kids the way he did. As you grieve as a family, take peace and comfort knowing that Mr. Way had an impact on so many of us who grew up playing with the DYB or the Gander Citadel Band. Well done, good and faithful servant.

Condolence From: Renée Martin (Hewitt)
Condolence: Edna, Bill, Brian and family, Words can not express how sad I am to hear of Cal’s passing. There are many people who share in the grief of your loss. Cal made a great impression on everyone he met especially the hundreds of bandsmen and women who played under his leadership. Many hours of my life were spent with Cal. I was lucky to have attended his Gander band practice, DYB, music camp and retreats. I will always remember his love for music, ministry and a good story. He was always making everyone laugh with some kind of silliness. To say that he will be greatly missed is an understatement. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time and the days to come. Condolence: Brian, I'm so sorry to hear of your dad's passing. He was a positive influence on me when we were younger. The days of the Divisional Youth Band were some great times that we all spent together. He always had something to tease me about and a smile to send me on my way. Even as recently as last fall at the Clarenville Citadel his teasing continued. As young people, his leadership brought us all together and for that I'm so thankful. I wish you, your mom and Bill (& your families) peace during this time. Sincerely, Sabrina

Condolence: Edna, Bill, Brian and family. Wayne and I were saddened when we heard of the passing of Cal. He was indeed an influence on many young people as he used his God given gift of music to teach them and to Glorify God through the Salvation Army Band. We remember when Joanne joined the Gander band at such a young age, because of Mr. Way's dedication. May God comfort you and bless you in the days to come as we mourn the loss a man who presented the Gospel through the music of the band. When my late husband, Hector, and I were Corps Officers in Gander, we appreciated so much his musical contribution to the Corps and his enthusiasm for the band. I remember his excitement when Gander Band was invited to the Atlantic Congress in Halifax. When we left Gander for our first overseas appointment, Cal brought the band out to the airport to play for us. Earth's loss is heaven's gain and we live in hope of a great reunion some day. God bless and be with each one of you and may your heavy hearts be lightened by His promises, presence and peace.

Our memories of Cal are good ones, He always greeted us with a jovial hello and treated us with respect. I last saw him in October at Tim Hortons and he made sure to say hello as I was standing at the counter. He now has many tunes to play and sing, Maybe when I get to where he is he will teach me what I would love to learn in music. Our love and prayers to your family

Condolence: Mrs. Way and family, I'm so sorry to hear of Mr. Way's passing. I hope these messages can bring some comfort during this time of great sorrow. Know you are not mourning alone. And know we have a GREAT HOPE of seeing him again. Thank YOU for sharing him with all of us. This was a tribute I wrote about Mr. Way on my Facebook yesterday: He (Mr. Way) was the definition of a leader to the generations behind him. He taught us to love and learn music, disciplined us, encouraged us to work hard, got mad at us, laughed with us (and I’m sure at us), and through it all loved us as shown through his dedication of a lifetime of servanthood all rooted in his love for Jesus and the Church. Thank you for the memories of 11 years [1990-2000] of music camp and 4 years of dragging me around the province with a bunch of other ragged teenagers to play beautiful cords [DYB 1996-2000]. Thanks for taking a chance on the tiny, shy 14 year old girl who you had no idea even played the cornet (trumpet)! You’ve impacted me and thousands more. I can still hear the baton tapping loudly on the music stand when we sounded terrible ;)

Condolence From: Bonnie (Norman) Bragg
Condolence: So sorry to hear of Calvins passing. A wonderful man and always a pleasure to be around. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of when Calvin would come to Bonavista for vacation with Billy and Brian. Billy and I would watch Brian while Calvin and Mom (Maisie) chatted and boy could they chat. As Isaac Way would sing all the time "And oh what a weeping and wailing" be assured there was much crying and rejoicing when Calvins family and friends welcomed him home! i would love to attend his service but unfortunately I am in Fort Mcmurray. Please accept my condolences on the passing of Calvin
