Myra Penelope (Tilley) Goodyear passed away peacefully at the James Paton Memorial Hospital on May 23, 2018. Predeceased by her husband Stephen Goodyear, daughter Linda, parents Eva and James Tilley. She will be sadly missed by her son Norman of Deadman's Bay, daughter Sharon (Jim Skinner) of Gander, sisters Iris (Lawrence Lewis) of Stouffville, ON; Gloria (Eric Bishop) of Gander, grandchildren Elizabeth (Andrew) Goodyear- Grant, Stephen Goodyear, Matthew (Melissa) Skinner, Jamie (Dana) Skinner, great-grandchildren Emily Hiscock, Audrey Grant, family and friends. Myra will also be missed greatly by a wide circle of relatives and friends.
Myra was born in Lumsden, NL and moved to Kelligrews as a young child. She lived there until her parents moved back to Lumsden to care for her maternal grandfather. She had wonderful stories of her life in Kelligrews with our Tilley family. She missed peanut butter and the smell of fresh perked coffee when she moved back to Lumsden. After completing high school, she did a teacher certificate and began a career in teaching. Her first school was in Stag Harbour. She enjoyed being a teacher, and when she and Steve married, she moved to Deadman’s Bay and taught there for several years. She was very active in the church and the community. She was always active with Presbytery, and enjoyed her years of service. She enjoyed her involvement with CGIT and was an organist at church.
When Myra and her family moved to Gander, there were a couple of years of struggle while they got back on their feet after a tragic house fire. She eventually settled into a career in HR at the hospital, a job she enjoyed and remembered fondly, especially her lovely coworkers. Myra had a passion for knitting, and took great satisfaction in seeing a pattern come together, the more intricate the better!
Myra and Steve were devoted to each other, the true loves of each other’s lives. They are now reunited. Steve was a gentle but strong rock for the family, and Myra was the matriarch — but also a woman very much ahead of her time. Myra had spirit, an iron will, and an independent mind. She was funny, generous, and smart. She was resilient, as Newfoundland women have always been. We see many of these traits in both her great granddaughters, Emily and Audrey, with whom she was particularly smitten. Myra was loyal and devoted to family, especially her children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughters.
We are grateful for the care she received at the JPMH, whose staff were attentive and understanding.
