Special thanks to the staff at Dr. Hugh Twomey Health Care Centre in Botwood and Nightingale Manor in Gander for the wonderful and thoughtful care given to Barbara. The family also extends heartfelt and sincere thanks to the large circle of friends who have supported them throughout the years.

Barbara was born in Grand Falls, NL on February 25, 1931 to Frederick and Violet Hiscock. After her father passed away when she was young, and as the eldest of 7 children, she often filled the role as caregiver to her siblings. Barbara worked as a telephone operator for the phone company for a time. During a weekend visit to Gander, a few hours away by train, she met her husband to be, Roland Whittle of Baine Hr., Placentia Bay. They were eventually married in Gander and lived there the remainder of their lives, spending almost 60 years together during which time they raised their two children John and Nancy. Over the years in Gander, Barbara taught sewing to a great many students at the Vocational School, as it was then known, and worked for Sears Canada. She dearly loved sewing and quilting and sharing, with others, her abundance of knowledge. The many pieces she gifted to her children, family and friends are cherished and proudly displayed. Barbara was an active member of the Women's Institute, YQX Quilter's Guild, Wednesday's Sewing Group, her church and a proud member of the Red Hat Society.

Nancy and family,
Sending condolences to you on the recent passing of your dear mom. I met her many years ago and will always remember here grace and kindness.
We always managed to have a chat about something , when we’d meet incidentally. I’m sure you have lots of wonderful memories to help you in the difficult days ahead .

Dear John and Nancy, and family: We are sorry to hear of your Mother's passing and send our deepest condolences. We remember Aunt Barbra for her warm welcomes whenever we stopped in to visit no matter the time or circumstances. Sometimes we arrived from BC in the middle of the night, or in the middle of the day just to say hi. She always had a delicious lunch prepared for us. Some of our favourites were her homemade macaroni and cheese and her baked beans. Like so many others we have a beautiful quilt that she made and sent to us many years ago. We are thinking of all of you and your families at this time of great loss and sadness.

John, Nancy and families, so sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Being next door neighbours on Memorial Drive, we share many memories. Your mom taught me how to sew many years ago while I was in the Girl Guides and working on my sewing badge. My love of sewing continues to this day. Cherish your memories. Hugs to you all.
