Passed peacefully away at Lakeside Homes in Gander, Eileen Caroline Elms, age 97.
Predeceased by her parents, Captain James and Ethel Dawe, husband Clement, brothers Eric (Evelyn), Walter (Pearl), in-laws Flossie (Clarence), William (Marion), Clarence, Herman and Lorne.
Left to mourn with loving memories are her sons, Howard (Audrey) Elms, Jim (Donna) Elms and grandchildren Steve (Dee), Brad (Wendi), Jim (Annette), Lynette (Keith), and Rob (Sue). Great grandchildren, Jack, Sam, Brynn, Ben, Dylan, Brittany (Rick), Janelle, Nathan, Sophia, Alexis, Lesley and Drew. Great-great grandchildren Derek and James. Also, sisters-in-law Eileen and Winnifred as well as a large circle of nieces and nephews.
Eileen was born in Coley’s Point and had an interesting life as a young girl spending some of her time on her father’s schooner (Fort Gary) when they went to Labrador. She also played on the girl’s championship hockey team.
Upon completion of high school she entered the General Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1944. She married her childhood sweetheart who had just returned from overseas and moved to Gander where she lived the remainder of her life. While in Gander, she worked at the Banting Memorial Hospital and later the James Paton Memorial Hospital.
Eileen was deeply devoted to her family and church. She will always be remembered for her unwavering love for family, her kind heart and resounding laughter.
Resting at Stacey’s Funeral Home with visitation on Saturday, November 16, 2019 from 2:00-4:00pm and 7:00-9:00pm. Funeral will be held Sunday, November 17, 2019 at 2:00pm St. Martin’s Anglican Church. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the staff of Lakeside Homes for their expert care and kindness to mom in the years she spent in the home. We are sincerely grateful for the comfort and kindness provided to her and family members in her last days.
