Obituary for Lucy Sturge
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Lucy Loretta Sturge (nee Mahoney), announce her passing on April 3rd 2020, at the Lakeside Homes, Gander at the age of 96. Lucy was predeceased by her beloved husband Wilfred, her parents John & Mary, her brothers Victor, Patrick, Michael, William and Steven, her sisters Alice and Marie.
Lucy was born October 5, 1923 in Stock Cove Bonavista Bay, the youngest of 8 children. In 1938 at the young age of 15, Lucy left home and travelled to St. John’s via coastal boat with $5 in her pocket to find work. She found employment in the home of Capt. Douglas Fraser as as a housekeeper and stayed in his employ for a few years until she took a position as a cook with Judge Alfred Wallis and his family where she stayed for 7 years. In 1949 Lucy decided to leave St. John’s and move to central Newfoundland to work at the Newfoundland Airport with Cara Caterers before Gander even existed as a town. Lucy met the love of her life, who also worked at the airport, Wilfred John Sturge and the two were married in 1952. Lucy moved from Cara to manage the Bowering stores at the airport until her retirement in 1987. Lucy and Wilf had 10 years wonderful years of marriage before tragedy struck when Wilf suffered a massive heart attack and died in Lucy’s arms at the home they shared. Lucy was devastated at his death, she never remarried, and loved Wilfred as much on the day she died as she did the day they were married. After 58 years apart, they are now reunited in heaven.
Lucy didn’t have any kids of her own but she did become a second ‘mom’ to her brother Mike’s kids when his wife died suddenly. She took on this role willingly with open arms and an open heart. She formed a very special bond with Mike’s youngest son Jim, who was only 17 months old when his mom died. Lucy raised Jim as if he was her own child and for Jim, Lucy was the only mother he knew. She will be forever missed.
Left to mourn with loving memories of Lucy are her nephew Jim, nieces Marilyn and Mary (Roy) as well as a large circle of family and friends.
Lucy was an extraordinary person who will always be remembered for her loyalty to her close friends, her fierce determination, her compassion and that devilish smile she’d have when she was about to get up to something ‘no good’.
A special thank you to the Lakeside Homes Extended Care Nursing staff for their care, compassion and for the dignity they always showed our beloved Aunt.
Amid this time of restrictions on social gatherings, Lucy’s Funeral & Internment will be planned in the coming months.
In keeping with Lucy’s final wishes, cremation has already taken place.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Lucy’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or the Gander & Area SPCA.
