BOEY CHEE
(Sept. 14, 1929 – April 24, 2020)
Boey Chee Yee Wong, age 90, unexpectedly passed away at her home in Botwood, NL on Friday, April 24, 2020. Beloved wife of the late Young Wong (d. 1975); devoted mother of MayLing (aka Madeline) in Ottawa, ON, Edgar (Maria) in Wellsboro, PA, Betty in Ottawa, ON, Gilbert (Debbie) in St. John’s, NL, Kathleen in Gander, NL and Donna (Corey) in Edmonton, AB.
A loving grandmother of James, Michael and Laura Hum, Adrienne, Daniel and Ean Wong, Melissa and Olivia Wong, Quinn and Faye Tomsons and great-grandmother to Jackson Hum and Lilith Banovic. She was a kind sister-in-law of Hui Qiu Chen, aunt of Phillip (Kim), Winnie (Albert) and Yun Yu, and great-aunt of Sally, Judy, Andy and Stephen Chen, Richard and Jimmy Wang. She also leaves, with fond and loving memories, a large circle of other family, longtime friends and neighbours across Canada, USA and China.
Boey Chee had immigrated, with their young daughter, to Canada in June 1952. Boey Chee with her husband Young, raised their 6 children in Botwood while running a restaurant and then a convenience store. They were probably best known for their coconut cream pie (restaurant) and Custard Cones.
Boey Chee was often seen in her vegetable garden, where she tended to her garlic, carrots, snow peas, potatoes, and too many other vegetables to mention. She nurtured her goji berry plant until she could garden no more. She shared her bounty, especially the rhubarb, with many friends and neighbours. She had a penchant for coats, hats, and scratch tickets and not necessarily in that order. She was well-known for playing a mean round of cribbage. She always looked forward to an afternoon or evening game with her dearly departed friend, Peter Dwyer Sr. or her children.
Boey Chee or Mrs. Wong, as she was proudly known as, was very appreciative of the friendship she developed with David, Terry, Cathy, and the Foodland staff who invited her to dinners in their homes and at staff celebrations. The Wong family would like to thank the paramedics, RCMP and staff at Stacey’s Funeral Home for the support and compassion offered during this difficult time.
Due to Covid-19, cremation has taken place. A memorial celebration of Boey Chee’s life, once travel restrictions are lifted, will be announced. Interment will follow with her final resting place, next to her loving husband, at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in St. John’s, NL.
