Obituary

Mar. 21, 1956 – Sept. 22, 2020, Pike, Barry Wayne (Pikey), passed peacefully away with his family by his side. Predeceased by his mother Martha (Fry), and his sister-in-law Jennifer Downs. Left to mourn with precious memories are his loving wife of over 40 years, Toni, son Stephen (Lisa Fudge) Gander, daughter Heather Butler (Matthew) Paradise, grandsons Hudson and Riley Butler, father Colin Pike, Gander, brother-in-law Shane Downs (Marcheta O’Brien) St. John’s, and a large circle of friends.

After a career of over 36 years, Wayne retired from Nav Canada in 2015, and lived his retirement to the fullest. Besides genealogy, playing the guitar, birdwatching and photography, Wayne enjoyed travelling – and he and Toni saw and did things that he thought they would only read about. From bicycling across the Golden Gate Bridge, to climbing upon the Great Pyramid of Giza and cruising the Nile. From parasailing off the coast of Thailand, to ballooning across the landscape of central Turkey.

But nothing fulfilled his life or made him so happy as his family. He and Toni practically went everywhere and did everything together. He so enjoyed her company. And he was so proud of Stephen and Heather. From small children to grown adults, their accomplishments put a smile on his face and a sparkle in his eye.

In keeping with Wayne’s wishes, cremation has taken place. No flowers by request. Donations in Wayne’s memory may be made to Ronald McDonald House Charities Newfoundland and Labrador online at http://www.rmhcnl.ca/ or by phone (709) 738-0000.

Wayne enjoyed doing small deeds for strangers. So pay it forward when you have an opportunity.

“Remember me with smiles and laughter, and thoughts of the good times that we’ve had.”

Hi Toni and families,

Lynn and I were saddened very recently to hear the news of Wayne's passing and offer our sincere condolences. Wayne was a guy born for making memories. Some of my fondest work related memories of working in Gander involved Wayne in some way or another. Always in for a laugh or helping to instigate a practical joke, he was a pleasure to be around and genuinely helped to keep things light for those working with him. The Christmas Rounders were a must to attend and I have many memories of him being front and center with his laughter, music and stories.

Toni and family,
It was with great sadness that I learned of Wayne's passing. I had the extreme pleasure of working with Wayne for 23 years, and even after all that time, it was a pleasure to meet him in the hallway or have a guaranteed laugh when he would visit our IFSS OPS room. Like Norm on 'Cheers', there would be a chorus of "Pike!", "Pikey!" or "Wayne!" whenever he came in to see us. He always carried a rolled up, empty sheet of paper; he told me this was his trick of always looking busy!!
To say that Wayne was thoughtful is a great under statement. I know of several kindnesses he did for colleagues, but they were done quietly and confidentially, never looking for praise or accolades. I mentioned to him once how I LOVED Licorice Allsorts candy. It had to be 2 months later that I opened my locker to find, what else, but a bag of that very candy, and they were the REALLY good ones from Costco!! I was stumped at first as to who might have put them there but I suddenly remembered our previous conversation. Needless to say, later that shift, he entered our room, caught my eye and gave me one of his impish grins!! It meant so much to me that he thought to do that for me.
Thanks, Wayne, for sharing your kindness and laughter with all who were blessed to have known you. I will certainly try to follow your example and your wishes to pay it forward. God bless you, Wayne; you will be greatly missed!
