Frederick Whey
June 5th,1930-December 5th,2020

Passed peacefully away on December 5, 2020 at the James Paton Memorial Hospital, Frederick Whey of Gander, NL, aged 90 years.

Predeceased by his sons, baby Vincent (1966), George (2014) and Bernard (2019); and his granddaughter, Esther Ruth, who passed away on the same date (December 5, 1977).

Leaving to mourn his loving wife of almost 68 years, Abigail (nee Brown); his daughters, Madeline (Ben) Welshman of Hammonds Plains, NS, Phyllis Whey of Calgary, AB, Marjorie (Arnold) Hookey of St. John’s, NL; sons Fred (Sandy) of Calgary, AB, Vincent (Cindy) of Gander, NL and Terry (Stephanie) of Goose Bay, NL; daughters-in-law Sharon Whey of St. John’s, NL and Julia Whey of Gander, NL; along with a large number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren as well as a large circle of friends and relatives.

Fred was born on June 5, 1930 in Kerley’s Harbour, Trinity Bay and moved to Bonavista Bay at a young age. There he met his true love, Abigail Brown, and they were married on December 30, 1952 and they lived and raised their family in Trinity until their move to St. John’s in 1974 for him to work in there. As a young man, he worked at a number of jobs including fishing and woodcutting and then started a career as a carpenter for the remainder of his working life. He built his own home in Trinity and built much of the furniture for the home himself. He retired from work in St. John’s in 1990 and moved back to Trinity until they moved to Gander in 2015.

He loved traveling with Abbie in his Motor home and meeting different people along the way. He loved having his family around him and was always telling stories of the olden days to the kids. Fred had a smile that would brighten up the room when he entered. He will be missed by all.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Stacey’s Funeral Home, Gander, NL. Public viewing will be from 1:00pm to 4:30pm on Monday, December 7, 2020 at Stacey’s. Due to COVID restrictions, there is a limit of 10 people at a time at the funeral home for the viewing. Funeral services and interment will be in Trinity, B. Bay, NL which will be by invitation only.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Fred’s name to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of NL.
