Susie Muriel Gray (nee Goodyear) of Gander formerly of Lumsden passed peacefully away at the James Paton Memorial Health Care Centre on Thursday January 14, 2021 at the age of 92 years.
She was predeceased by her husband Jabez Gray; parents Frank & Lenora Goodyear; brothers: Earnest, Lloyd, Morley; sisters: Pearl, Flo and daughter Baby Gray.
She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories daughters: Lynn (Claude) Gill, Janice (Brian) Kelly; granddaughters: Crystal Gill, Samantha Gill;grandson Matthew Kelly, great grandchildren: Dreygen, Quinne, Vera; sisters: Iola (Sam) Goodyear, Joyce (Arnold) Clarke and also a large circle of other relatives and friends.
Susie was born July 15, 1928 to Frank and Lenora Goodyear in Lumsden and moved to Gander in 1952 and settled into their home they built on Medcalf St. in 1958 and considered one of the pioneering families of Gander. Susie was married to Jabez Gray in 1947 and they were together for 60 years. They raised their daughters Lynn and Janice in Gander but maintained roots in Lumsden and eventually built a summer home there in Windmill Bight. They enjoyed many years of enjoyment and relaxation and their summer home with Susie often helping Jabez doing chores, gathering berries tending to their vegetable gardens or just driving the shore to see what was on the go. Susie grew up in a large family of eight children. Many of her brothers and sisters have predeceased her. She lived her life with her two younger sisters, Iola and Joyce being two of her closest friends. These sisters shared many fun adventures, often traveling of working together alongside their husbands. Whether they were on a road trip or planting potato gardens many a good laugh and good humour were shared. Susie was a stay at home mom and devoted her time and passion and skills to providing a loving home for her husband and children. Many a friend was treated to her wonderful hospitality and delicious baking and cooking. No work was too much for Susie whether it is chopping the wood, mowing the lawn or cooking up a scoff for a dozen people all her work was done with a large measure of love. She would always maintain close contact with friends, especially in their hour of need and she would never visit anyone without a gift to offer, be it a box of chocolates, bottle of wine or some homemade treats. Her gifts were an expression of concern and compassion for others. Near the end of her long life, Susie continued to spread goodwill. She befriended many of the hospital staff where she spent her final days. It was important to her to express her gratitude to those who cared for her whether it be a friendly wave, a good morning to you or a smile thank you. She wanted these people to know they were very much appreciated and that is a part of her legacy. To all who knew Susie or just met her she was someone who would not be forgotten. Her generosity, loving and caring ways will remain in the hearts of friends and family and may it be a guiding light to home we can treat each other better. That is something Susie would have wanted.
Family will be receiving friends at Stacey’s Funeral Home, 60 Roe Avenue, Gander from 1-4 p.m. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 global pandemic and government guidelines we ask for your patience during visitation times. A small family service will be held at Stacey’s Funeral Home on Saturday January 16, 2021 at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Reverend Hillier with interment to follow at All Saints Cemetery.
