Maxwell Frederick Lush
July 1, 1936 - April 7, 2021
Passed peacefully away at home on April 7th, 2021, at the age of 84, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Predeceased by parents; John and Henrietta Lush, son baby Richard, sister Blanche (Hennis Shivers), twin brother Peter (Yvonne) and brothers; Dr. Norman Lush (Greta) and Wilfred (Virtue), niece Hilda Shivers, and mother and father in law; George and Annie Turner.
Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories: His wife Nora (nee Turner), son Craig (Cynthia), daughters; Stephanie (Dean Cull) and Joanne (Shawn Laite) all of Gander. Grandchildren; Megan Laite (Alex Winsor), Emily Laite, Abigail Lush and Jared Lush. Sisters in law; Gloria (Eddie Philpott) and Beulah Thorne. Nieces and nephews; Cindy (Andrew Lathigee), Nancy Lush, Sandra (Malcom Simpson), Janet Lush, Linda Faulkner, Terry Thorne (Edna), Tim Thorne (Leigh), Robin Thorne (Olive), Ruth Bishop, Leah Philpott, and Ryan Philpott (Ceri).
Max was born in Harbour Grace on July 1st, 1936. He moved to Gander as a young boy with his family where he lived in various locations in the old town site, including the American side, Deadman’s Pond, and the Army side. Deadman’s Pond, was a place where he enjoyed boating, swimming, and gathering with friends and family. In 1947, Max’s family took ownership of the log cabin at Deadman’s Pond. The log cabin became the “social spot” for residents in Gander as many weddings, events and formal gatherings were held there.
Max met the love of his life, Nora, in high school at Hunt Memorial Academy. They were married October 25,1958 and enjoyed every minute of the 62 years they were married. In the same year, Max and Nora were one of the first residents to build a house in Gander, and developed cherished relationships with their neighbours that continue today. Max worked at the Banting Memorial Hospital as the purchasing director until the hospital closed, he then worked at The James Paton Memorial Hospital when it opened in 1964 until he retired in 1992.
Max Lush was an exemplary man in every way: generous, kind and patient beyond measure. A loving husband, who made sure his wife, Nora, knew every day how appreciated she was. He was his children’s role model, and grandchildren’s hero. He was tremendously proud of his town and had a great appreciation for the people in it. He was well known for his friendly nature, quick wit, and informative stories. He was a man of simple pleasures and spent countless hours fishing, hunting, and enjoying nature, especially with his buddy Bert.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the palliative care team and continuing care nurses at Central Health, the James Paton Memorial Cancer Clinic, Gander Pharma choice Staff and Dr. Tony Gabriel for their support that allowed Max to live out his last days at home surrounded by his family. A special thanks to his favourite nurse, his daughter, Stephanie and son Craig and daughter Joanne.
Max was a very caring man and his giving nature was evident to all who met him. Max supported many national charities annually and volunteered his time to many organizations until the age of 83. One of the organizations he volunteered with in which he took great pride was the Breakfast Program at Gander Academy. In lieu of flowers we ask that you donate to the Breakfast Program. Funeral service will take place at St. Matthew's Anglican Church, Gander on Saturday, April 10th at 2:00 P.M. Due to the Pandemic restrictions, attendance will be by invitation only. However, the Funeral Service will be live streamed through St. Matthew's Anglican Church, Gander Facebook page.
