Obituary for Samuel Wells Newman

March 11, 1930 – August 9, 2022

It is with great sadness that the family of Samuel Newman announces his passing at the James Peyton Memorial Health Center, Gander on Tuesday, August 9th, 2022, surrounded by his loving family.
Sam was predeceased by his parents Susanna and Bidkar Newman of Joe Batt’s Arm, Fogo Island, his four sisters and two brothers.

He leaves to mourn with fond memories, his wife Iris of 52 years. His daughter Lisa and son Jason. His grandchildren Katie, Karlee, Samuel, and Jane. His great grandson Kenneth. As well, his sister Betty. Sam also leaves a large circle of in laws, nieces, nephews, and many longtime friends.

Sam thoroughly enjoyed watching sports. He loved to play cards and bowling. He really loved to go berry picking and fishing with Iris. Sam was also a faithful member of his church.
Sam spent his early years working in Buchans Mines, and thirty years until his retirement, working as a train engineer with QNS&L Railway, Labrador City.

He retired in 1992 and moved his family to Gander. Sam really enjoyed his summers at Joe Batt’s Arm, where he and Iris could fish and enjoy his boat and reminisce with Islanders.

Cremation has taken place.

Visitation will take place on Thursday August 11, 2022, 2-4pm and 7-9pm, at Stacey’s Funeral Home, Gander.

Funeral service will take place at St Martins Anglican Church, Gander, Friday, August 12,2022, at 2pm, with internment to follow at All Saints Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of one’s choice.
