Obituary for Emerson Eric Hounsell

It is with great sadness that the family of Emerson Hounsell announce his passing on September 23, 2022 at the age of 74.

Predeceased by his parents, Donald and Nadine Hounsell, two infant siblings, and his sister Olga Rizzo (Vic).

Leaving to mourn, with fond and loving memories, his devoted wife, Marilyn, of 53 years, his daughter Susan Hounsell (Kevin Head), son Robert Hounsell (Leanne), cherished grandchildren Aiden and Charlotte; sister Beverly Tupper (Kevin), sister Zeta Penton (Bernard), brother George Hounsell (Jean), brother Jeff Hounsell (Bernadette) and sister Paula Allured (Danny). Also leaving special and extended family, brother-in-law David Bradbury (Peggy), brother-in-law William Bradbury (Danielle), and much loved nieces and nephews in both the Hounsell and Bradbury families.

Emerson was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He treasured his time with his family and embraced every moment that he spent with his wife, his children, their spouses, and his grandchildren. His brothers and sisters, as well as Marilyn’s brothers, were some of his closest friends. Emerson and Marilyn loved travelling both with the immediate family and visiting other family members in various locations on the Continent. They have a lifetime of memories of travelling in their motorhomes, going on cruises, train trips and flying across Canada and the United States.

Emerson owned and operated his family-based business since the early 1970s when he took over from his father, the late Donald Leslie Hounsell. Within the community, Emerson dedicated endless hours to the promotion and enhancement of small business. He had been involved with the Chamber of Commerce on many levels and in numerous capacities over three decades. He served as President of the Gander Chamber of Commerce, the Newfoundland and Labrador Chamber of Commerce, the Atlantic Canada Chamber of Commerce, and on the Executive of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. Emerson also dedicated his time to other community-based organizations, having served on the Board of School Trustees and Gander Worldwide Incorporated. He served on the Board that established the Gander International Airport Authority and the Board of the Golden Legion Manor. Emerson was also national President of the Canadian Automatic Merchandising Association.

Emerson’s generosity to community and volunteer-based organizations was well recognized and he contributed regularly to local auctions and charitable events.

Emerson had a tremendous sense of humour, usually expressed through witty or tongue-in-cheek remarks intended to engage others in prolonged amusing banter – he was truly a social character.

Special thanks to the staff of 4 South B of the Health Sciences Centre.

“At the end of life, what really matters is not what we bought, but what we built; not what we got, but what we shared; not our competence, but our character; and not our success, but our significance. Live a life that matters. Live a life of love.”
