Obituary for Leo James Greene

“I’ve been everywhere man, I’ve been everywhere” (Hank Snow)

Leo James Greene
April 15, 1940 – November 2, 2022

Dad embarked upon his last journey on November 2, 2022 at the New Long Term Care Facility in Grand Falls-Windsor.

Dad had a fierce love of work. He worked with Abitibi-Price, Grand Falls as a welder for many years. A job for which he had a great deal of passion. Dad loved his job and was always known for showing up extremely early for work and often reminisced about his time at the mill and was known to many coworkers as “buckshot”.

He was a proud member of the Boilermakers’ Union which provided him the tremendous opportunity to travel throughout Canada and the United States to provide for his family. His travels took him to the Oilsands in Alberta to the Nuclear Power Plant in Toledo, Ohio and most places in between.

Dad was a proud founding member and 4th Degree Grand Knight of Joseph Coleman Council 8686 in Badger where his faith and leadership was evident with his participation in church and community.

His love of Hank Snow was abundantly known by those who had the privilege of knowing and loving him. One could bet that he knew the lyrics to every song Hank ever performed. True Story.

Dad’s story started on April 15, 1940 with his twin sister, Shirley. Born and raised in Gambo, NL to James and Johanna Greene.

Loved ones that cleared the path for dad are his parents, James and Johanna, brothers – Thomas, Joseph, Ronald and Alex, sisters – Philomena, Frances, Madeline, Hannah and Olive.

Leo leaves behind his partner, Mary Hurley of Heart’s Desire, daughters Stephanie Greene of Badger, Mona O’Brien and life partner Darrell Allen and the light of his life, his only grandchild, Nicholas of Truro, Nova Scotia, twin Sister, Shirley Cochrane (John) of Kirkland Lake, Ontario, Barbara Kelly (Garrett) of Gambo, Mary Lambert (Johnny) of Gander, Marion Cotter and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

A Very Special thank you to Mary, Danielle (Neil) and Peter Hurley and the Home Care Staff of Heart’s Desire area and to the staff at Carmelite House and the new Long Term Care Center in Grand Falls-Windsor.

Cremation has taken place with funeral services entrusted to Stacy’s Funeral Home, Gander.

Burial Mass will take place at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church in Gambo on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2022 at 12:00 noon officiated by Father William Hearn with internment to follow at Gambo RC Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request a kind gesture to be carried out towards family, friends or stranger. Dad would often tell stories of his travels and included in this was his kindness towards humanity.

“A heart of gold, a love sincere, beautiful memories keep you near. Always loved and missed forever.”
