Jerry's education began in Norris Arm and later he continued his education at the Community College in St. John's where he received his Welding Diploma. He worked for several companies after graduation, with one job in particular involving welding the huge water tanks in Bonavista and Wesleyville. After a while he became restless and wanted to have a business of his own. During this time, he married and began working with the pole lines among other things.

Jerry saw great opportunities in Gander and moved his family here in 1973. He became a very successful businessman through hard work and perseverance. His insight into what would make things a great opportunity was unbelievable. First he invested in a company in receivership which flourished under his direction as McCurdy Construction. There was a lot of construction in Gander during this time- apartment buildings, residential subdivisions, the expansion of the Gander International Airport and the Canadian Forces Base. He took steps to broaden his organization and in 1979 he purchased a Ready Mix and Concrete Block Manufacturing business which became McCurdy Ready Mix. His business continued to grow with the construction of The McCurdy Complex, the purchase of B&M Paving and True North Springs. He was never afraid to try something new. He contributed so much to the Town of Gander with the development of a 330 acre subdivision, Spruce Court which he has patiently been constructing since 1992. He was very proud of everything he accomplished.

Jerry instilled in his family work values and fairness. He was a wonderful provider and showed his family how to succeed in the business world. He will certainly be missed.
