Obituary for Clarence Rideout

Clarence Ralph Rideout at the age 89; passed away peacefully on the Geriatric Psychiatry Assessment Unit at the Waterford Hospital in St. John’s on November 24, 2022.

Born on April 9, 1933 in Cottlesville, NL to Claude and Meta Rideout 1 of 6 children. Meta died in the spring of 1940 with Tuberculous and the children were separated and sent to live with relatives in nearby communities. At the age of 6, Clarence nestled in Whales Gulch to live with Aunt Maggie & Uncle Will Rideout while his father went back to work in Nova Scotia.

As a young man in the 1950’s and 60’s he did a lot of touring and working away. Just like the road he travelled; his life had endured some bumps in the road as well. Bernice & Bruce, he carried an abundance of memories of you in his heart for many years. In the mid 70’s, with strong emotion he guided himself back east. Finally deciding to ground himself permanently to a simple peaceful life back in Whales Gulch, Notre Dame Bay where he once lived as a child. He had a real passion for Newfoundland and was certain that’s where he wanted to be. He was very well-known in the community along with his Newfoundland dogs while being a big part of a little Anglican Church (St. Phillip’s) on Taylor’s Room. He will be fondly remembered for his great words of wisdom, the stories, and legends from years ago along with many old photographs that would take anyone back in time.

Clarence is also survived by his brother Melvin (Rosann) White; nephew’s Wilfred Rideout; Bruce White; Clayton (Sandra) White; Kevin (Terry) White and niece Cynthia White. Sadly left to cherish the fondest of memories is Moody (Beverley) White; Godfather /Grandfather figure to Amanda (Cory) Budden; Rhonda (Jeff) Freake; Carla (Clint) Vallandingham; Abby (Jack) Gross; Riley Freake; Zoe Vallandingham. Predeceased by his parents Claude & Meta Rideout; brother’s Wilfred & Rueben Rideout; sister’s Bernice Rideout & Lillian (Homer) White and many extended family members.

The family would also like to extend the sincere thank you to the GPAU nursing staff, Dr. Curtis and Dr. Sang at the Waterford Hospital. This team is truly a beautiful diamond (clear and pure) within Eastern Health System and deserve a big shout out. You are a proven example of what health care is supposed to exemplify; we are beyond grateful he got to experience this type of care and compassion during his 4 short weeks of being there.

As requested, a private family cremation service will be held in Valley Pond, NL at a later date.

Arrangements entrusted through Stacey's Funeral Home, Gander - Carmanville.
