Obituary for Susan Spencer Hogan Barbour
With sadness we announce the passing of our mother, Susan Spencer Hogan Barbour in her 94th year after a brief illness. Born Nov. 17, 1929 in Cul de Sac West, NL – Died Jan. 09, 2023 in St. John's, NL
Predeceased by her daughter, Dianne, brothers Rev.George and Jack Spencer, brother-in-law John Almasi, daughter-in-law Virginia Hogan, brother-in-law Fr. Greg Hogan, sister-in –law, Dorothy Goff and her husband Ed Goff, as well as many close life-long friends.
Leaving to mourn, her precious sister, Jess Almasi, sisters-in-law, Elaine Spencer and Maisie Spencer,
children, Catherine Hogan Safer (Andrew), Peter Hogan (Kathleen), Don Hogan, Doug Hogan (Shirley) Jennifer Hogan, Chrys Hogan (David Guy) and Celeste Quinton (Dave).
Gramma Susie will be missed terribly by Andreae, Jennifer, Ginny, Rachel, Adam, Adrian, Sam, Lauren, Laurel, Shannon, Olivia, Dylan, Avery, Delaney, Michelle and April. There was nothing our Mom liked better than to spend time with ‘the cousins’. A few of them were convinced that Susie loved them best and sometimes argued the opinion. There was always laughter.
Great Gramma Susie leaves Bonnie, Charlie, Jude, Eleanor, Hayden, Sam, Mara, Silas, MacKenzie, Matthew, Michelle, James and William.
Mom will also be missed and remembered fondly by nieces and nephews – Spencers, Almasis, Goffs, as well as a large number of friends, and so many children of friends, who have known her forever.
Our mother was ready with a great meal, cooking advice, recipes, amazing bread and a place to nap for anyone of us who showed up to visit in Gander, whether announced or not. There always seemed to be someone coming or going at her apartment.
Mom gave us the best books, fine poetry, ideas, curious minds. She has always been the thread that kept us in touch with each other. Even if we hadn’t spoken for a while, she knew from phone calls and visits what was going on in our lives, and spread the word.
Fiercely independent, Mom lived on her own a little after her 93rd birthday, and didn’t budge until health difficulties forced her to accept an offer of help and a move to St. John’s. She was a force to be reckoned with, and will always be recalled as a tough bird with a brilliant mind of her very own. Rest in peace Mom. We love you.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be at Stacey’s Funeral Home in Gander, 7 – 9pm Sunday, January 15, and 9 – 11am Monday, January 16. A brief service will follow on Monday at 11:30, presided over by Rev. James Spencer.
