Obituary for Mildred Amy Powell

It is with great sadness that we announce that Mildred Amy Johnson Powell (nee Dyke) passed peacefully away at the Gander Long-Term Care Home on Friday, January 13th, 2023, at the age of 91. She was surrounded by family and love.

Mildred was predeceased by her husband Colin; father Israel James “Jim” Dyke; mother Elizabeth Dyke (Brown); and sisters Winnifred, Mabel, and Emma.

She leaves to mourn her son Don (Cindy) of St. John’s; daughter Susan of Saint John, NB; grandson James of Houston, TX; granddaughter Theresa of St. John’s; niece Barb Surette-Pittman (Dana) of St. John’s; and a large circle of extended family and friends throughout the Eastport peninsula.

Mildred’s passion in life was learning. At the age of 17, she attended Memorial University Teacher’s College in St. John’s. Upon graduation, she took her first teaching position in Burin and later returned home to teach in Glovertown, Eastport, and Happy Adventure until her retirement in 1989. Forever a teacher at heart, Mildred spent her retirement sharing stories of her generation and her knowledge of history, and quizzing her family on Jeopardy trivia.

She also loved her church community. As a young woman, Mildred sang in the Eastport Anglican Church Choir and then spent many years as an organist and singing in the choir at the Good Shepherd United Church. She continued to sing and play the keyboard during her time at Baywatch Manor in Glovertown and more recently enjoyed the singalongs at the Gander Long-Term Care Home.

Visitation will take place at the Good Shepherd United Church in Happy Adventure on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, from 2:00 - 8:00 p.m., with funeral service to follow on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. Interment to follow at the United Church Cemetery.

Flowers are warmly accepted and donations in Mildred’s memory can be made to Good Shepherd United Church or the Canadian Diabetes Association.

The family also wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at the Gander Long-Term Care Home for their loving support of Mildred during her stay.
