Obituary for Richard Moulton

Richard Moulton
February 22, 1929 to January 31, 2023.

Passed peacefully away at the James Paton Memorial (JPM) Regional Health Centre, Gander on January 31, 2023, Richard Moulton, aged 93 years. Predeceased by his wife Sharon (nee Arnett) Moulton, his parents Henry and Hazel (nee Kenway), and his brother-in-law Mervin Young.

Leaving to morn his son David, daughter in law Betty (nee Mullaly), and two precious grandsons Joshua (Elizabeth Westwood), Grande Prairie, Alberta and Jeremy, St. John’s, NL, his sister Marguerite Young and niece Debbie Colhoun, St. Thomas, Ontario plus, an extended circle of family and friends.

Richard (Pop) loved the sea. As such, he worked as a Marine Engineer for over 40 years until he retired at age 65 years. He worked on the Lake Boats in Ontario and later for Marine Atlantic. He also worked on the Atlantic Freighter which was a contracted supply vessel during the Persian Gulf War in 1990-91. He was a very proud sailor and maintained contact with many of the crew he worked with on the Marine Atlantic boats as well as the Atlantic Freighter. Pop loved being out in boat with his son David, his friends Gary Perry and Murdock Pritchett and in particular his two grandsons. He enjoyed visiting the resettled island of Port Elizabeth, Placenta Bay where he was born and raised until he immigrated to Canada from Newfoundland in 1948 (his immigration papers are a wonderful keepsake). On the island he would go scuba diving for scallops and reminisce about growing up there. These memories will be cherished by all who heard them, particularly Josh and Jeremy.

Pop loved to travel. In addition to traveling for work he and his wife Sharon (Grandma) enjoyed travelling internationally. Their favorite trips included those taken to Bermuda, New Zealand, and throughout Europe. It was his interest in travel that sparked an interest in collecting and displaying lapel pins that not only he collected but those that others were so kind in giving him. He very much appreciated these small little gifts and treasured the thousands of pins in his collection. His grandson Joshua has been bequeathed his collection.

The family extends a heartfelt thank-you to the kind and caring staff at Golden Years Estates, Gander, and the medical unit at the JPM Health Centre. The kindness and care you provided to Pop is very much appreciated.
