Obituary for Reuben "Reub" Hillier

Reuben (Reub) Hillier was born on Brunette Island in Fortune Bay on October 10th, 1937. He spent his youth growing up in Fortune. Reub moved to Gander in January, 1957 to begin his successful career at Gander Aeradio.

Reub quickly planted his Gander roots and fostered many friendships, earning the respect and admiration of both friends and coworkers.

Soon after arriving in Gander, Reub met and married his soulmate and love of his life, Anne Nolan of Sweet Bay, Bonavista. Together they had five children; Reub is survived by Anne, his wife of 64 years and his children; Connie Bull (Chris), Karen (Rob Kelly), Chris (Brenda), Glenn and Rose. Reub was equally proud of his grandchildren: Marc, Vanessa, Nathan, Natasha, Ryan, Lucas, Alexa, Andrew, Addison, Justin, Jade and Corey. Reub also enjoyed his great-grandchildren Mya, Dreygen, Quinne, Maddox and Reuben.

Reuben leaves to mourn his sister, Evelyn (Barbara), brothers Gerry and Phil (Sandy) and brother-in-law, David Hall (Rhea). Also mourning Reub’s passing is a large and extensive family of in-laws and nieces and nephews.

Reuben is predeceased by his parents Walter and Rita, his sister Irene Hall and brother Eli.

Reub was a selfless man, well loved by all. He had a particular set of skills for any situation and was always eager to lend a hand to anyone in need as well as eager to pass on his knowledge and experience so that his kids didn’t have to learn the hard way. He wanted only the best for all of them and he was the best. He is remembered as a true gentleman, a wonderful husband and a supportive and loving father and adored by his grandchildren. Reub was greatly respected and many have said they’ve never met a better man.
Reub’s absence will be profoundly felt.

Family will be accepting friends at Stacey’s Funeral Home, Gander on Thursday, February 16th from 1:30 P.M. – 4:30 P.M. A small private family service will take place at Stacey’s Funeral Home on Friday, February 17th. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery.

He Is Gone
You can shed tears that he is gone
Or you can smile because he has lived
You can close your eyes and see all that he has left
Your heart can be empty because you can’t see him
Or you can be full of the love that you shared
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
Or you can be happy tomorrow because of yesterday
You can remember him and only that he is gone
Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
Or you can do what he would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.
