Obituary for Roy Milton Stoyles
The family of the late Roy Stoyles regret to announce his passing on May 19, just four months shy of his 90th birthday.
Roy was still a teenager when he left his childhood home of Hillview and headed to Toronto seeking fame and fortune. His mischievous nature wasn’t a good fit for big city life so he headed back home to Newfoundland. He moved to Glenwood where he met Iris Kendell, the love of his life, and they settled in the town that he bragged about as “the best place on Earth.”
Roy loved his work with Bowaters. Over the course of 42 years he rose through the ranks to become Woodlands Superintendent. Some of his fondest memories (and funniest stories) were of time spent as Manager of Camp 23 which was the heartbeat of the Glenwood Woodlands Operation.
Roy loved the outdoors. He was in his element hunting, fishing, cutting firewood, snowmobiling, quadding and doing anything else that took him “up over the road.” He spent countless hours planting, weeding and harvesting vegetables.
Roy loved to socialize. He and Iris hosted thousands of friends at their cabin in Nor’West Gander. There was always an offer of a drink, a meal, a game of cards, a party, or all of the above.
Roy loved to read. He had a keen interest in politics and current affairs and he loved a good debate. He never left any doubt about where he stood on issues of the day.
Roy loved his family. He and Iris raised two sons; Robin (Denise), Roger (Joanne), and two daughters Bonnie Abbott (Paul) and Judy Kendall (Dave). He will be dearly missed by ten grandchildren Kelly Goulding (Rick), Lacee Abbott (Giuseppe Diana), Cheryl Philpott (Brian), Stephanie Abbott (Josh Caines), Andrew Kendall (Courtney), Lucas Kendall (Meagan Power), Amy Stoyles, William Stoyles (Julie Ballard), Bradley Stoyles (Noralie White) and Steven Stoyles as well as seven great grandchildren.
But above all else, Roy loved Iris. They spent 67 years as husband and wife, endlessly devoted to each other and inseparable until the very end.
As per Roy’s request there will be no funeral service or public visitation. Cremation has taken place and a private family inurnment and celebration of life will take place at a later date. Those wishing to express condolences may do so by reaching out to Iris since she will be missing her lifelong partner and best friend.
