Robert Janes

The family of Dr. Robert Alexander Janes sadly announce his passing after a lengthy illness in Gander on January 24 at the age of 86.

Predeceased by his parents William and Sarah, he leaves his wife Joy Janes, his 2 sons; Grant (Jennifer Janes) and Brad (Elsa Zhu); 2 grandchildren; Alexzander and Jake Janes; his sister Pauline (Harry Maidment) and brother Bernard.


Bob was born in St. John’s in 1938 and he liked to talk about growing up on Brazil Street in the 1940’s and 50’s which clearly shaped him in many ways. After graduating Dentistry from Dalhousie University, he started his practice in Gander in 1968 and continued until his retirement in 2007. He was a past president of the Newfoundland Dental Board and the Newfoundland Dental Association, as well as a Member of the American College of Dentists and very much enjoyed his 40 years practicing Dentistry in Gander. He once said that he would never want to practice anywhere but Newfoundland because of the people.

A lifelong traveler, Bob always wanted to see the world and experience its many different cultures and he continued to travel for as long as he could. He was also up for trying many different things like skiing in the Rockies, trying to master French cooking, trailering across Canada, canoeing down the Gander River, trying to scuba dive in his 50’s, all with different levels of success. We will dearly miss that enthusiasm for life together with his sense of humor as he loved to laugh and so much enjoyed being around people. It was a life well lived.

Family will be accepting friends at Stacey's Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 28th, 2025 from 2:00 P.M. - 4:00 P.M and from 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. and a funeral service will take place at Stacey’s' Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 29th, 2025 at 2:00 P.M.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Fraser Road United Church, Gander .
