It is with great sadness that the family of the late Nish (Ignatius) Maloney of Gander, NL, announce his passing on April 11, 2026, at the age of 90, at the James Paton Memorial Health Centre. Nish was predeceased by his parents, Daniel and Blanche Maloney (née Kelly); brothers Leo, Fred, Cyril (Sr.), and Daniel; sister Marie Halleran, Brother in laws, Clarence Halleran, Thomas Maloney, Sam Maloney, Wilfred Maloney, Johnny Maloney and Phil Woodford, Sisters in laws Sadie Maloney, Agnes Maloney, Josephine Woodford and Bernadette Maloney.

Left to mourn with loving hearts are his devoted wife of 37 years, Angela Maloney; sister Nellie Maloney of Kelligrews, brother Matthew (Vera) Maloney of Sweet Bay; sisters-in-law Jean (William) Murrin of St. Anthony, Sisters in laws Dorothy Maloney of Kelligrews, Louise Maloney of Sweet Bay, Cecilia Maloney of Gander and Gertie Maloney of Gander. He will also be fondly remembered by a large circle of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews all of whom held a special place in his heart and were dearly loved.

Over the past week, Uncle Nish said more than once, “I’ve had a good life.” And as family and friends gathered to visit him, called to check in, and shared precious moments together, it became clear just how true that was. We had the privilege of listening to so many beautiful stories and memories spoken with love, gratitude, and quiet awe.

Each of us believed our relationship with Uncle Nish was something uniquely special only to discover that he shared that same depth of care, warmth, and connection with so many others. That was his superpower. He made everyone feel seen, valued, and deeply loved. It is easy to understand why he became such an important presence in so many lives.

He was a safety net for countless people. With his calm, quiet, capable presence, he simply showed up and got to work. Somehow, every situation felt better just because he was there. He never wanted recognition or fuss; knowing that he had improved the lives of his family and friends, even in the smallest way, was thanks enough.

His steadfast commitment to walking Cobb’s Pond every day regardless of weather or circumstance was nothing short of remarkable. This daily ritual was a non-negotiable act of self-care and meeting familiar faces each day made his walk even more special.

So many of us can vividly recall one of the best days of our lives was spent with Uncle Nish. For some, it was a boat ride on the water, for others, a spirited card game. For many, it was building a cabin or a deck anything involving wood, a hammer, and nails always ending with a cold beer and the quiet satisfaction of a job well done.

Every person who had the privilege of knowing him is better for it. Uncle Nish lived a life rooted in kindness, humility, and connection—and his legacy lives on in the countless hearts he touched.
