Irene Elizabeth Broderick 

Aug 29, 1945 – April 14, 2026 

It is with broken hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of our precious mom, Irene.    

Born and raised in Markland, Trinity Bay to Mary & Hedley Antle on August 29, 1945, Irene was the second oldest of 8 siblings.  She obtained her teaching license after high school and taught in many places in Trinity Bay, including Markland where she taught siblings, cousins and family friends.  She met and married the love of her life in 1965 and lost him to soon at the early age of 48. She welcomed his parents, her elderly mother and father-in-law into her home and cared for them while raising her two children. As a single mother she began work at Walmart and worked there for over 25 years, while still giving so much of herself to her family, friends, community and her faith. She was a cornerstone of the community at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Glenwood and worked tirelessly to help others in her role there.  

Irene was predeceased by her husband Nick Broderick (d. 1984), grandson Nicholas (d. 2023), parents Hedley and Mary Antle (nee Coombs); In laws Bridget and Nicholas Broderick; sisters Rita (Bill) Hillier, Sally (George) Brace, Violet (Rex) Abbott, brother Harvey Antle and nice Darlene Hillier; Michael (Martina) Broderick, Greg (Philomena) Broderick, Ronald (Mary) Broderick, Bill (Bertha) Broderick, Gus (Edith) Broderick; niece and nephews Ron (Pauline) Broderick, Marlene Broderick, Michael Broderick, Andrew Broderick, Patrick Broderick, Brian Broderick, Daniel Broderick and Lisa White. 

Left to mourn her loss are son Kevin (Tanya) and son Riley; daughter Beverley (Robert) and children Dakota (Christina), Brady (Holly), and Sierra; sisters Phyllis Antle (Ontario), Florence Antle-Brison (Paul Brison) of Nova Scotia and Evelyn (Lloyd) Barbour of St. John’s; sister in laws Michele Antle of Markland and Eleanor Kennedy of Pasadena; special niece Theresa Torraville, who shared her faith and very much enjoyed their visits; special nephews Leonard, Cyril, Eugene and Len Broderick; nieces Nellie Casey, Annette Bridgeman, and Carmel Broderick; as well as too many other Broderick nieces and nephews to mention all by name; siblings’ children: nephews Nelson and Adam; nieces: Sharon, Judy, Cathy, Laura-Jane,  Alice-Dawn, Rhonda, Renée, and Pamela; great niece and nephews Vanessa, Heidi, Holly and Connor, Kayla, Parker and Amelia, Joshua and Jocelyn, Rachel, Mary-Anne and Michael, and Caleb and Rachel, and Michael, Megan, Malcolm and Mitchell; best friend Fr. William Hearn; Lianne and Lonz Bryan, Albert and Helen Oake, Shim Vivian, and Margaret and Tommy Carew. 

How do I describe my Mom? 

I have come up with so many words, but the one word that comes to me the most is Dedicated. Mom was dedicated to everything she has ever done in her life. She was dedicated to her family and friends, to me and Kevin and her two heartbeats: her grandsons, Nicholas and Riley, and most of all, her Church and her Faith - that little white church in Glenwood. St. Anne’s was the center of her life for so many years. 

When Nicholas passed away 3 years ago, we thought it would be the end of Mom. But she picked up her crown and straightened it and kept going.  Although it took a huge piece of her heart when he passed, she kept going for Kev, Tanya and Riley. Having stayed busy with boarders, cooking for Kev’s crew or me coming home from work. Mom loved to bake and cook for others; she enjoyed seeing the smiles on people’s faces when they saw her masterpieces and then tasted them. Mom loved to feed people; it made her happiest being in the kitchen and made a lot of other people happy when she was in the kitchen as well! Of course, we can’t forget her amazing ice cream cakes and wedding cakes that made everyone so happy to see and taste.  She knitted and made quilts for all the new babies and children in her life. 

Mom met her precious Nick in 1968 on a blind date, and only a year later, on May 23,1969 they were married in that little white church in Glenwood that she loved so much. They spent their first year of marriage in Corner Brook, then settled in Glenwood, where Kev would make his appearance in 1970.  I came along 11 short months later to complete their happy family of 4. Then they would move to Appleton, where Mom remained until she passed. Dad left us unexpectedly at the young age of 48 on May 27,1984, leaving Mom a widow at only 38, with 2 young teenagers and her mother-in-law still living with us. 

Mom worked several jobs in her life when she returned to the work force after Dad’s passing, but her dedication was to Woolworths, Woolco then Walmart where she retired after over 25 years. Speaking of dedication, she was respected so much that they put the flags at half-mast in her honour at Walmart and at Appleton Town Hall. 

Mom touched so many people and lives in her life - too many to mention. Her friendship will be missed and fondly remembered by so many, especially her best friend Fr. William Hearn, who has been Mom’s rock since Nicholas passed; Lianne Bryan, who was also by mom’s side for years; friends Albert and Helen Oake, and Shim Vivian, who will miss his many meals and ice cream treats every night. 

She left behind not only her friends and immediate family, but her many honorary grandchildren: Joshua, Ben and Josie, Erica and Haley, Braden, and Carson & Riley, not to mention my 3 stepchildren Dakota, Brady and Sierra who she accepted as her own grandkids.  

There is so much to say about Mom, but her faith was above all. Mom truly believed in Heaven, and I’m sure she is up there now reuniting with all that have left this earthy life ahead of her. With the last words she spoke, she told me that my father was in the hallway. I should have known then that her time here on earth was coming to an end, and I’m sure she was overjoyed to be reunited with him after 42 years. As many have said in the last few days, “If she is not gone to Heaven, it doesn’t exist.” 

Although she is not with us anymore, Mom will always be here in spirit. A piece of each of our hearts is gone with mom. But just like she would do, I will straighten my crown and keep living life honoring her and her faith, and willing to help others whenever I can. 

Family will be recieveing friedns at St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church, Glenwood On Tuesday April 21, 2026 between the hours of 2-4 & 7-9 p.m., from where the Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday April 22, 2026 at 11:00 a.m., officated by Father William Hearn. Funeral service overflow will be held at Riverside Pentecostal Church where the funeral service can be watched via Livestream. Interment to follow at The St. Anne's Roman Catholic Cemetery, Glenwood. 

As expressions of sympathy, flowers are graciously accepted or donations in Irene's memory may be made to St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church, or the Cemetery Fund.

We want to express our huge thanks to everyone who helped in any way during her short illness and passing: everyone who sent messages, meals, cards, flowers, many phone calls, and visits. Also, anyone who has travelled to be with us at this difficult time; to special friends Theresa Baldwin and Lianne Bryan who came to the funeral home with me to help plan the funeral; Fr. Hearn who was only a phone call away and checked in often, Sister Elizabeth, and Elizabeth at St. Joseph’s Parish Center; Jody and Tyler Shea for digging her grave; Pastor Patey for accommodations at Riverside Church and Stacey’s Funeral Home for the professional and amazing service. Thanks as well to all of Mom’s family and friends and her church family; my Walmart family for always supporting me, and to all Kev’s friends and extended family for their support shown to him and his family.
