It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Frederick Hollohan on May 21, 2026, at the age of 74. He passed away surrounded by his loving family, held close in his final moments.

Leaving to mourn is his beloved wife of 49 years, Alice; his daughters, Karen (Adrian), Jenelle (Mike), Robyn (Jayson), and Rebecca (Dion); and his cherished grandchildren Samir, Sunny, India, Alexander, Madison, Mea, Bryce, Hayden, Morgan, and Ella. He also leaves behind his brothers Philip, Lewis, Leo, and Jim; sisters Cathy and Cynthia; and his gentle giant, Francis the Bouvier.

John was predeceased by his parents, Leo and Violet, and his sisters Marion, Doreen, and Lillian.

John and Alice first met at a high school dance in 1969. In the years that followed, they both found themselves working at the airport in Gander; John with Allied Aviation and Alice with Eastern Provincial Airways. Together they travelled to many beautiful countries around the world before eloping in Barbados and returning home to build a life and raise their family.

John later returned to school to pursue his love of carpentry. He began by building wooden toys for his girls to pull all over the house and a sandbox for their preschool. He made furniture for the family home such as beds, coffee tables, and a beautiful stereo stand that still stands proudly in their home today. His talent eventually led him into the kitchen cabinet business, where he worked for many years before retiring.

As a proud Newfoundland father of four daughters, he taught them life skills: how to catch trout or salmon, stack a chord of wood or even how to skin a rabbit. He was always critical of all boyfriends putting them through the ringer with a hundred questions, making sure they got the girls home on time and backed into the driveway just right.

John’s happiest times in life were being surrounded by his family and friends, especially outdoors. He spent many years taking Alice and his girls in boat to Terra Nova River. He could navigate the river with his eyes closed and knew all the right places to fish. He loved chatting with people fishing on the river. He was happy when the house or cabin was full. He loved moose hunting, listening to music, playing accordion or darts, enjoying a game of cards or cooking food to be enjoyed by all. John was known for telling stories, anything from wildlife to politics. He had a loud voice, strong opinion but his sharp wit and humour kept everyone laughing even in his final days.

In his retirement years, John enjoyed his time with the love of his life, Alice. They spent many summer days at their cabin in Bonavista Bay cod fishing. They enjoyed gardening vegetables together and raising chickens. As a proud Poppy, he loved watching his grandkids’ hockey games and bragging to others about their successes. John also enjoyed caring for other people’s dogs, knowing them all by name, caring for each one like it was his own.

The family would like to thank Dr. Wadden, Dr. Dicks, Dr. Hassan, the ICU and Respiratory staff at James Paton Memorial Hospital in Gander. Their exceptional care and comfort they provided will never be forgotten.
