Frederick Allan Small

March 17, 1948 – May 23, 2026

It is with great sadness our family would like to announce the passing of Frederick (Fred) Small after a brief illness. He passed peacefully away at the James Paton Memorial Health Centre, Gander.

Fred is predeceased by his mother Vera Small and his father Parmaneus (Joe) Small.

Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife of 15 years Malyn, son Dean (Kerry), daughter Darlene (Steve), grandchildren Lucas and Victor, sister Sandra (Barry), niece Shannon and great nephew Gianni and of course his cat fluff boy.

Fred was born in Gander on March 17, 1948 where he grew up and spent his whole life, raised his family and had a long career with NAV Canada. He started his working career as a Telegraph operator/Security with CN Railway at the Alexander Bay Station in Glovertown which he often spoke about. He later moved on to Eastern Provincial Airways (EPA), then in the 70’s he started to work with ATC (NAV Canada) where  he spent the rest of his working life and retired from in 2009. He was a volunteer with the Gander Fire Department which he very much enjoyed.

Dad always loved the outdoors camping and spending time by the salt water at his home in Musgrave Harbour and was always there to lend a hand to whoever needed it.

The family wishes to express a heartfelt thank you to the staff in both the ICU and Surgery Departments at JPMHC and we would also like to send a very special thank you to his good friend Harvey Cuff for taking care of their home in Musgrave Harbour and providing transportation to his wife Malyn back and forth to the hospital during this difficult time.

Family will be accepting friends on Wednesday, June 17th from 7:00pm to 9:00pm.at Stacey’s Funeral Home, Gander, from where the funeral service will take place on Thursday, June 18th at 2:00pm.

Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in Fred’s memory may be made to the Gander and Area SPCA.
