Reverend Harvey Bullen Obituary

Harvey Bullen
May 24, 1942 - July 15, 2026

Harvey was born in Harbour Breton, Fortune Bay, on May 24, 1942.

He was the son of the late Hubert Bullen and Ida King. His mother left her home in Grates Cove to take a position as a nursing assistant at the Harbour Breton Cottage Hospital. She was only 38 years old when she died, and his father was just 57 when he died. Both succumbed to cancer. The children in the family were cared for primarily by his grandmother.

He was educated in Harbour Breton, graduating from high school in 1959. He studied at Memorial University and Queen’s College from 1963 to 1968, graduating with a BA. In 1973, he completed continuing studies at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

He was the assistant administrator at Harbour Breton Hospital from 1962–63, taught school from 1968–79, and then served as Religious Education program coordinator with the Terra Nova School Board until 1993. He served as a Human Relations consultant until his retirement in 1996.

St. Martin's has been Harvey’s Church home since the early 1970’s, with Jason and Tracy being baptized and confirmed here.

Throughout his life, Harvey served the Church with faithfulness and love. He was Curate at the Mission of Flowers Cove and served in various interim incumbencies in parishes that needed counsel and healing ministries.

In 1970, Harvey was appointed honorary assistant at St. Martin’s Cathedral, where he has served as a priest, associate, and friend to the clergy and people who served there. He facilitated many youth activities, including Sunday School and the Junior Choir at the Cathedral, and served faithfully as the Diocesan Chaplain to James Paton Hospital and the seniors’ homes in Gander. Harvey was one of the founders and facilitators of the Alpha Course, which was a major influence on Christian teaching in our Diocese. He served as a founding member of the local Crisis Intervention Center, the Boys and Girls Club, and the first Pre-School center in Gander.

He was also a reporter for the Gander Beacon, interviewing leaders such as Prince Phillip and Governor George Wallace, and travelled on the Concord aircraft to and from London, England.

In February 2012, Christine, his dear, sweet wife of 43 years, went home to be with the Lord, leaving him heartbroken. In 2015, he met Jessie Lyon, whose husband of 46 years also went home to be with the Lord. They were married in 2019 and spent time together travelling and visiting Square Pond and Shriners Park campgrounds. Harvey, a deep lover of nature, enjoyed this time immensely.

Harvey left this world in the same manner that he had lived his life – by being busy.

He was in the process of hanging the newly laundered shirts that Jessie had just completed for him. He sat in his armchair, still holding a shirt he had just put on a hanger, when he passed away to be with his saviour, whom he had faithfully served for so many years. He has left behind a great legacy of love, patience, wisdom, and friendship, and will be forever missed by the family.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Christine; brother, Reginald Bullen; sister, Gladys Morris and sister-in-law: Carmelita Bullen

He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his wife, Jessie; children: Jason (Patty), Tracy (Ian), Colette & Christopher; grandchildren: Michael, Nicholas, Andrew, Kaitlyn, Jonathan, brothers: John Bullen, George (Emma) Bullen; sisters: Stella (Hubert) Mayo, Barbara (Kearney) McGrath; sister in Law: Meta Bullen; brother-in-law: Wesley Morris and also a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
