Percy Keith Chaytor (Pearce)

July 3, 1946 – July 17, 2026

It is with heavy hearts, but a lifetime of wonderful memories, that we announce the peaceful passing of Percy Keith Chaytor—known affectionately to those who loved him as Pearce, Dad, Pop, Poppy Pearce, or “Fierce Pearce.” Percy left us on July 17, 2026, at the Lionel Kelland Hospice, surrounded by the family who meant the world to him, following a brave battle with cancer.

Percy’s story began on Flat Island, before he resettled to Port Union. As a young man attending trade school in Corner Brook, he met the love of his life, Dianne. It only took five months of dating for Percy to know she was the one. After tying the knot, the young couple moved to Labrador before eventually settling down in Glenwood, where they built a beautiful life together over 54 years of marriage.

For 35 years, Percy worked as an account manager for the Provincial Government. But he was far more than his day job; Percy was the ultimate community man. He poured his time and heart into Glenwood, serving as the town’s mayor, and keeping the books straight as the treasurer for the Sea Cadets, St. Andrew’s Church, and the Glenwood Volunteer Fire Department.

Percy was a devoted, deeply loving husband. For over a decade, he patiently cared for Dianne at home during her battle with Alzheimer’s, a true testament to the vows they took over five decades ago.

He was a wonderful, patient dad to his daughters, Tracylynn and Chantal. But as much as he loved his girls, everyone knew that nothing on earth quite compared to the pride he had for his two granddaughters, Cassidy and Loclynn. Whether they were out grabbing lunch together, discussing world events, or just chatting about their everyday lives, Percy absolutely beamed whenever his granddaughters were around.

Percy also had a deep love for the great outdoors, especially salmon fishing on the mighty Gander River. He dedicated nearly 50 years to this hobby, and there was no doubt that the "Slaughter Hole" was his absolute happy place. He was a proud, true-blue Newfoundlander with an encyclopedic knowledge of the province. He possessed the ultimate Newfoundland superpower: he could tell you exactly what community someone was from based solely on their last name.

Percy was intelligent, calm, easygoing, and a steady rock for his family, and he will be forever missed by all who knew him.

Left to mourn and cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Dianne; his daughters and sons-in-law, Tracylynn and Glenn Smith, and Chantal and Roley Mullett; his adored granddaughters, Loclynn Smith and Cassidy Mullett; and his sister, Maxine Chaytor, along with a large circle of extended family and friends.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude and heartfelt thanks to Dr. John Campbell and the entire staff at the Lionel Kelland Hospice in Grand Falls-Windsor. The exceptional compassion, love, and care shown to Percy and his family during his time there provided immense comfort when it was needed most.

Funeral service will take place from St. Andrews Anglican Church, Glenwood on Tuesday July 21, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. with interment to follow at St. Andrews Anglican Church Cemetery, Glenwood.

He will be forever missed, but never forgotten. In the words of Pearce:
