She was a cherished daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend whose warmth and kindness touched the lives of those who knew her.

Joan found happiness in the things she loved most. Whether she was sitting at her sewing machine, carefully piecing together a quilt, or spending hours in the kitchen baking something delicious, she had a special way of putting love into everything she did. Her quilts were made with patience (or lack there of, lol) & care, and her baking brought comfort and sweetness to the people lucky enough to share it.

Some of her fondest memories were made around a table playing cards with her siblings. Those games were about more than just the cards — they were about family, laughter, friendly competition, and the bond they shared. These moments, along with the many stories and traditions she passed down, will be treasured for generations to come.

Joan will be remembered for her personality, work ethic, generosity, kindness and for the love she gave so freely to her family. The lessons she taught, the traditions she carried on, and the memories she created will remain with those who loved her. During her time with Sinbads, she met many people who started out as strangers but quickly became friends.

Predeceased by her handsome grandson Nicholas Broderick, her parents Harvey Peckford & Masie (Gillingham) Peckford, her siblings: Violet (Waterman), Betty (Gillingham), Mike, Ralph & Diane.

She leaves to cherish in her memory, her daughter Tanya (Kevin Broderick), son Glen (Jeanette), grandchildren: Shaunae (Daniel Allen), Riley & Sienna. Siblings: Reg, Rosalind, Tom, Jeanette, Frank, Paul & Randy. Also, a large circle of family and friends whom Joan cared very deeply for.

Though she may be gone, her love will live on in every quilt made, every recipe shared, and every deck of cards brought out around the family table.

Rest peacefully Nanny Joan (A). You will be forever loved and never forgotten.

In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place.

Family will be receiving friends at Stacey's Funeral Home, 60 Roe Avenue, Gander on Sunday October 11, 2026 between the hours of 2-4 & 7-9 p.m.

As expressions of sympathy in lieu of flowers donation in Joan's memory may be made to the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Wing's Point.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Stacey's Funeral Home, Gander and to leave a message of condolence please visit our website at www.staceysfuneralhome.ca.

Phyllis Marie Salas

Phyllis Marie Salas (Gosse)

“Marie” / “Maria”
June 20, 1952 – October 1, 2026

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Phyllis Marie Salas (Gosse), known to many throughout her life as Marie or Maria. Phyllis passed away on October 1, 2026, at James Paton Memorial Hospital in Gander. She was 74 years old.

Born in St. John’s on June 20, 1952, to Cyril and Evelyn Gosse, who would become longtime residents of Grand Falls, Phyllis lived a life that was anything but ordinary. She was curious, intelligent, adventurous, creative, and always ready for the next experience. She loved people, loved conversation, and, perhaps most of all, loved having a good time.

A lifelong educator, Phyllis began her teaching career in Newfoundland, including time at St. Paul’s in Gander and in Glenwood. Her career eventually carried her far beyond Newfoundland. She worked as a training consultant in Ottawa, taught in Texas, and spent several years in Doha, Qatar, where she worked as a teacher and later as a school administrator and department head. Education was an important part of her life, and over the course of her career she taught, worked alongside, and influenced countless people.

Travel was one of Phyllis’s greatest passions. She visited an incredible 56 countries during her lifetime, exploring historical sites, experiencing different cultures, and even going on safari. She eventually retired in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and made many friends throughout her years of travelling and living abroad.

Phyllis was the life of the party. She loved music and dancing, cooking for people, hosting dinner parties, and filling a room with conversation and laughter. She had a remarkable memory for people and could remember names years after meeting someone, despite having crossed paths with thousands of people throughout her life. She had a genuine interest in others, and that gift stayed with the people who knew her.

Phyllis enjoyed crafting and painting and always kept up with current events, music, and pop culture. Even in her final weeks, she enjoyed long conversations with her son Shaun about what was happening in the world.

Phyllis leaves behind her son, Shaun (Annie); daughter, Heather (Dion); granddaughter, Paige; sister, Patricia; brother, Michael; and a remarkable collection of friends, former colleagues, students, and acquaintances around the world whose lives crossed hers along the way.

A Celebration of Phyllis’s Life will be held in Gander in the spring of 2027. Details regarding the date and venue will be announced at a later time.

Arrangements entrusted through Stacey's Funeral Home, Gander - Carmanville.

Doris Scharpegge

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Doris Mary Scharpegge (née Dwyer), age 86, on September 30, 2026, at James Paton Memorial Hospital (JPMH) in Gander, Newfoundland.

Lovingly known as Dot, Mom, Mudder, Nanny Doris, “Dorisy Dog from the hood,” Doris was born in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, on August 18, 1940. She was the second of twelve children and the eldest daughter of Susie (née Noseworthy) and Edward Dwyer.

In the 1950s, the Dwyer family moved to Gander, where Doris finished school, began working, and met and married the love of her life, Jim Scharpegge, a member of the Canadian Forces. While many military brides left Newfoundland, Doris made it clear to Jim that she would live—and die—on “the Rock.”

Over the next three years, Doris and Jim welcomed their children, Susan, Sharon and Jim. Being a mom was Doris’s life purpose. She dedicated herself to “raising her crowd.” Summers were spent camping around the bay, and winter months were spent at the rink. Wherever her children were, Doris was there cheering them on. She rarely missed a milestone, a tradition she proudly continued with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren—attending concerts, cheering at sporting events and cooking for family celebrations. Her family was at the centre of her heart and her home until her last breath.

Never one to sit idle, Doris balanced motherhood with a variety of jobs throughout her life. She loved to be “in service,” and her 20-year career at the Co-op fulfilled her love of helping people, building relationships and connecting with her community. She may not always have remembered a Co-op member’s name, but she certainly remembered their number for decades!

Doris’s passion for service extended well beyond her work. She served as President of the Gander Kinnette Club, a member of St. Martin’s Bowling and was an active member of the Catholic Women’s League. She was often called upon to fundraise for charities and to collect donations for the food bank. Doris loved giving her time by sharing her cooking and baking delights. Her famous homemade bread, yummy date squares, delicious homemade soups and tasty Jigs dinners were shared with many over the years. Through these simple acts of kindness, Doris showed everyone who she truly was: generous, caring and always ready to help.

Doris was also always up for trying something new. In her younger years, she played softball and darts, and she bowled well into her seventies. She loved gathering with family and friends for a game of cards or Bingo, and her big personality earned her the well-deserved title of “the life of the party.”

In 2009, just one year shy of their 50th wedding anniversary, Jim passed away. Doris then moved to Golden Legion Manor, where she built a new life without him. True to form, she was quick to connect with her neighbours and create a community that soon became like family. With an open-door policy, Doris welcomed countless guests to her table. Her apartment became a gathering place for “the crowd,” where everyone supported one another through storytelling and shared meals. Over the years, Doris came to cherish her friendships with “The Golden Girls.”

Along with those friendships, her Roman Catholic faith and her commitment to serving St. Joseph’s Parish helped her not simply survive the later years of her life but truly thrive. Doris built a life filled with friendship, laughter, faith and purpose.

Even while living with the pain of cancer over the past four months, Doris never lost her sense of humour. In her final hours, on the way to the hospital, she spoke of her drastic weight loss in “certain body parts” and broke into her own rendition of Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5. It was classic Doris—right to the very end.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Susan Scharpegge (Pierre) and Sharon Loder (Craig); son, Jim Scharpegge (Arleen); and bonus-daughter, Cheryl Duff.

She will be deeply missed by her grandchildren Jonathan, Jennifer, Samantha, TJ, Tiffany, Alyson, Matthew and Kennedi; and her great-grandchildren Ethan, Ella, Phillip, Lauryn, Kali, Josie, Eric, Goldie, George, Maverick and Mariah.

Also left to mourn are her brothers Eddie (Cheryl) Dwyer, Jack (Linda) Dwyer, Phillip Dwyer and Terry Dwyer; sisters Ruth Dwyer (Dave), Pat Oake and Susan Howell (Joe); brother-in-laws Doug Buchanan and Pete Sheppard; and sister-in-law Linda Dwyer, along with a large circle of extended family and friends who were blessed to know and love her.

Doris was predeceased by her beloved husband, Jim; her parents, Susie and Edward Dwyer; her in-laws, Anna and Fred Scharpegge; brothers Gord and George Dwyer; sisters Jean Buchanan and Kay Sheppard; brothers-in-law Terry Oake and John Scharpegge; sisters-in-law Jackie Scharpegge and Joanne Dwyer.

Her “crowd” was her greatest joy, and she was theirs.

Doris leaves behind more than memories. Through a lifetime of laughter, service, friendship, faith, and, most of all, love, she had a beautiful life - fully lived.

She will be loved, missed and remembered always.

Family will be receiving friends at Stacey’s Funeral Home, Gander on Saturday October 3rd, 2026 between the hours of 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. and on Sunday October 4th, 2026 from 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will take place from St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Gander on Monday October 5th, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. officiated by Father William Hearn with interment to follow at All Saints Cemetery.

As expressions of sympathy in lieu of flowers donation in Doris’ memory may be made to the Gander & Area Food Bank.

The family would like to express our sincere gratitude to the palliative care team, especially Greg Banfield, and the ‘angels’ of the cancer care team at the JPMH, the staff at Stacey’s Funeral Home and the Catholic Women’s League. As Doris would say, “I love you all.”

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Stacey’s Funeral Home, Gander and to leave a message of condolence please visit our website at www.staceysfuneralhome.ca.

Pauline Rideout

Pauline Evelyn Rideout

The family of the late Pauline Evelyn Rideout (née Baldwin) are heartbroken to announce her passing on September 18, 2026, at the age of 85, just twelve days after the passing of her beloved husband of 66 years, Noel Rideout.

Pauline lived a large and loving life, one centred on family, home, friendship, and community. She and Noel built their life together in Gander during the town's early years, becoming part of a generation of families who helped shape a young town into the community they were proud to call home.

Fittingly, their home was on Baldwin Street, the same name Pauline carried before becoming a Rideout. With the help of Noel's parents, Pierce and Lillian Rideout, the young couple built their home there, adding a wing as their family grew. The house was built on solid rock, but its true foundation was the love Pauline and Noel shared.

Together they raised their three children, Shawn, Gary, and Michele, and Pauline filled their home with life. There were family meals, laughter, celebrations, countless drives around Gander, her own unique sense of decorating, and all the ordinary moments that, over a lifetime, become treasured memories. Through happiness, heartache, and loss, Pauline did her best, time and again, to keep her family close.

As the years passed, she delighted in watching her family grow. Her grandchildren, Chris, Trevor, and Chelsea, brought her tremendous pride and joy, followed by her great-grandchildren, Emily, Sam, Robbie Dean, and Keagan. Each new generation gave her another life to love.

Pauline was also eagerly awaiting the arrival of another great-granddaughter in December 2026. She knew the baby was a little girl and had spoken lovingly of having seen her in a dream, a memory she held especially close.

Pauline's caring spirit reached well beyond the walls of her home. She proudly served for many years as a Firette with Gander Fire Rescue, supporting the department and its members. During some of the most difficult and extraordinary moments in Gander's history, including the response to the Arrow Air disaster and the days surrounding September 11, 2001, Pauline was among those who stepped forward to help. Whether preparing meals, helping provide rest breaks, or caring for those who were caring for others, Pauline gave her time and support in her own quiet and loving way.

For 66 years, Pauline and Noel walked through life side by side, through its happiest moments and its deepest sorrows. They shared the joy of raising a family and watching generations grow, as well as the unimaginable heartbreak of losing their son Shawn. Their 67th wedding anniversary would have been October 14.

Pauline loved music, and perhaps most of all, she loved to dance. Those who knew and loved her can picture her young and free once again, reunited with her beloved son Shawn and her husband Noel, perhaps already showing them both how it's done.

Pauline was predeceased by her beloved husband, Noel Rideout; her son, Shawn Rideout; her parents, Harry and Gwen Baldwin; her brother Bob Baldwin; her sister Mary Bass; and her infant great-grandson, Mason Noel Dean Rideout.

Leaving to mourn with cherished memories are her son Gary (Joan) Rideout; daughter Michele Edwards; grandchildren Chris (Ashley) Ledrew, Trevor (Leslie) Rideout, and Chelsea Rideout; great-grandchildren Emily, Sam, Robbie Dean, and Keagan; and a cherished great-granddaughter expected in December 2026.

Also leaving to mourn are her siblings Yvonne Toffoli, Winston Baldwin, and Irene Doyle; sisters-in-law Joan (Bob) Decker and Bernice Butler; along with a large and loving circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, dear friends, and the Gander Fire Department family.

Pauline's legacy lives in the generations that grew from the home she and Noel created. More than wood, a roof, long halls, or even Pauline's unique décor on the walls, Baldwin Street was a place where family gathered, friends were welcomed, and there was always room for one more.

She lived a large and loving life, with room enough for all.

The house she made a home still stands. The family tree she helped plant continues to grow. And just how far Pauline's love will reach, perhaps only Heaven knows.

Visitation and service details will be kept private for family and close friends with interment to take place at All Saints Cemetery.

As expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations in Pauline's memory may be made to the Chief Noel Rideout Memorial Fund, established to support future generations pursuing service to their communities. Chief Noel Rideout Memorial Fund

Funeral Arrangemnets have been entrusted to Stacey's Funeral Home, 60 Roe Avenue, Gander and to leave a message of condolence please visit our website at www.staceysfuneralhome.ca.
