Arthur Stephen (Joe) Rideout, formerly of St. John's, passed away peacefully in his home in Gander on Monday July 6, 2020 at the age of 84.

He was predeceased by his wife Bonnie, his parents Arthur and Mary Rideout, and his sisters Linette and Roma.

Joe moved to Gander in the early sixties and married Bonnie Pinsent. He began as a radio operator with Aeradio (Signals Centre) in Gander until his retirement in 1991. He was driven to teach and lead. He was shift supervisor and became union leader in that time. He was a devoted father, active in sports, coached minor hockey, enjoyed gardening, played guitar, loved to sing, and was part of the Fraser Road United Church choir.

Poppa Joe is survived by his children Michelle and Darin, his son-in-law Tom, his brothers Robert, Winston and Mac, his sisters Marie, Audrey, Pamala and Beverly, and his loving and caring neighbours Bob and Pansy Small. He is also survived by his granddaughters who he couldn’t have been more proud of Bonnie, Lindsay, Alexandra, Paige, Heather and Olivia.

“There will a safe social distanced open house to have a chat and celebrate Joe’s life this Sunday September 13th from 1pm to 4pm at 107 Ogilvie St in Gander. In lieu of flowers in Joe’s memory, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke foundation or Canadian Cancer Society.

Joe, I cannot believe I'm reading your obituary. Joe was larger than life. Even though we have lost contact since retirement.... You never forget a character like Joe. To Joe's family, I had the pleasure of working with Joe for almost twenty five years. He was always so full of life and if you had the time there would always be a great story or two. We will all miss Joe. God Bless.

Michelle, Darin and extended familiy;
We are saddened to hear of the passing of your father. When we were growing up in Gander Mr. Rideout was always so friendly, kind and caring whenever he saw us. He was a wonderful man. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

Of all the IFSS supervisors who worked with Transport Canada and later renamed Nav Canada Joe was predictable. As a tech who was often called upon to assist with some technical aspects of running the Gander IFSS, when you got a call from Joe you often would be met with a balled up piece of paper improvised to be a baseball or a basketball. It was obvious Joe loved sports. While skating at the rink or walking around Cobbs Pond Joe would always take time to stop and have a conversation to inquire about mutual acquaintances. We'll miss him on our walks. RIP Gerard and Bernadette Noseworthy

Michelle, Darin and families,
Our deepest condolences go to the families of Joe, our longtime neighbour. We will surely miss him, his humor, our chats, and for sure his whistling coming from his backyard.
Sending love & prayers,

It was with sadness we learned of Joe’s death. I met Joe and Bonnie when Derm and I moved from Goose Bay to Gander. Bonnie and Joe always enjoyed travelling and having a good time. Joe was the life of the party, playing his guitar and singing. I am sure he is up there Now entertaining the angels, with Bonnie by his side. Joe spent many an hour playing hockey with his son Darrin on Brochen St. as well as enjoyed skating at the Civic Centre. Joe’s Many friends will miss Joe! Derm and I send our deepest sympathy to his family. Rest In Peace Joe!
