Betty - My mother's best friend
Bett was my mother's best friend. They were British War Brides. They were both in hospital (1982) and when my mother could hear her voice outside her room asking the nurse, which room she was in - My mother called out "I'm in here Bett"...She was going in for hip surgery but nothing would stop her from visiting my mother. Then, my mother would have me going to check on Betty to make sure she was okay. They were kindred spirits of sorts. It was all I could do to not tell her that mom had passed away - her beloved Max thought it best to wait until she was a bit stronger from surgery. Of course, he was always attentive to her.
Bett was an inspiration to me and will forever be. Some people when asked -"who inspired them" might say "Maya Angelou" or "Oprah". For me, it was Betty. She was a rare woman of great character. I loved her kind and gentle spirit - her energy. She was an unstoppable force. Travelling to England was an adventure for her, when some her age could only dream of such a journey. I always felt like she would be with us forever but I knew deep down, every day was a gift...
Even though the distance was great between us and we rarely saw each over the years, our bond was even greater.
I will miss you, my dear Betty...my friend.
